Steve.

Normally towards the end of Feb, indoors in propogators.

For the 2012 season though my first seeds will be sown on Boxing day, the traditional day for sowing Onion seed, and I'll be sowing some Giant Onion seed, then it'll be back to the end of Feb to start other things off.

Steve...:)

We start some tomatoes off end of january in a propagator, just to have something going  ;D

Depends. I tend to start things in pots, under cover, and apart from broad beans, and, this time, TPS, I don't start anything before March. I'm planning to get a polytunnel up during the year, and if I manage that, it'll be earlier the following spring.

Usually February for peppers then tomatoes etc. But this year will start some onion seed off in January. May even set some potatoes early in a bucket in the conservatory or poly. Depends on the temperatures. I can be too early if I get bored and need something to do.... ::)

I've thinned it down a bit. That's the first time in years I've let it fill up!

You are letting you wife get away with your 'potting shed' too easily..In our house its all year round job. I might have to clear the dining table for christmas though.. ::)
I've got last lot of chilli seeds to clear off from fruits to dry and then this years seeds are sorted. And after new year I'm going to start playing with compost.. ;D..can't wait. First to sow in late January is chillies for me...and then I start 'stroking' my tomato seed packets.. ;D...I might treat myself for few early sowings for drawf tomatoes..just to keep the 'sowing itch' under control.
Other than that I don't generally do much until end of Feb...but its all down to weather..if we have foot of snow then..I shan't rush  ;)

Ah now being a one woman show I get to choose which table to clutter.. But I shall be trying to be 'smart' for a few days around Christmas when the mob come and its 11 for lunch.. Mind you I like to knit, sew and other stuff so discipline is required.. ;)
I saved some pfa seed although I don't know whether its fit for purpose. All will be revealed in the New Year ::)

Do you folks use supplementary lighting?

Another early indoors sown crop is lettuce.  No growlamp needed and no propagator.  I sow second half February and transplant into the greenhouse or under cloches with fleece on top.  Nice early lettuces.  Lettuce can stand some degrees of frost, but rots very easily if it is too damp.

Some of the hardier types of lettuce will survive outside under bottle cloches.  Last year was an exception but most years it manages the entire winter.  Four seasons is a very touch cookie.  Produces a pretty lettuce with pink tinged leaves.  It does produce a head but I have never let it get that big.
