I have now loads of different seeds and stuff for the garden, lots more questions :-\

1. can I grow runner beans and sweet peas together to run up the same poles?

2. should I grow my runner beans, broad beans, courgettes and leeks in those jiffy bags planters to give them a head start?

3. How far should I cut my raspberry canes down?

4. How far should I plant my 2 damsen trees, I'm told they should be quite near? what would you recommend?

5. Should I get my onion sets out now?

Sorry lots of questions. :)

1 - Yes. White Lady & sweet peas look good together, but they're wasted on Painted Lady.

2 - Yes. I grow everything in modules to get a head start.

3 - Pass. Don't grow them; I go for loganberries instead and they get cut back to ground level.

4 - Assuming they are on dwarf rooting stock, mine have just gone in about 10 feet apart.

5 - Yes.

And I bet that you get lots of answers - all different!!

I even start my onion sets off in modules in greenhouse and they do well.

What sort of raspberries are they? The autumn ones are cut down to a few inches every winter. Summer ones are more complicated; they fruit on the old canes, so you cut out the ones that have fruited, and leave last season's new canes to fruit this year.

Thank you all, these have been very helpful answers.

Not sure what type of raspberry it is Robert as it has taken me a month to find out what it was in the first place :-\,   there is about 10 very long canes and was told to cut them down to about 8 inches,  so I may do and see what happens.  :)

If it's an autumn one you'll get a crop this year, in which case you just cut it back again after fruiting. If you don't get anything, it's a summer one, in which case you leave it till next year, cut out the stems which have fruited, and leave the new ones for the year after.

I have been very busy this weekend, I have cut back my canes so will report on what is happening on them.

I have planted my dwaft Merry weathers with bonemeal and pot ash as directed, they look very happy and my herb garden is looking less like a sandpit ...My onions and garlic are in and now potted up my runners, broad beans and sweet peas..

a quick one on strawberries - planted 6 plants do I need to cover them already?   :)
