I have a ten year old Garrya Elliptica, for the first ever time it hasn't produced a single tassel. Could it be the cold before Christmas, we were down to -13, or are they short lived? It was only lightly pruned for shaping last summer, so I don't think I've accidentally damaged it. Anyone else with this?

I don't think they are short-lived- every time I hear that name I think of the year I spent doing a horticulture course at Askham Bryan College- it was in one of our first "plant I.D. " tests and the one at the college was massive so had obviously been there a while.Lots of things suffered this winter, maybe it will recover.

I don't have one but I know they are only just hardy. Certainly I have seen them with frost scorch on their foliage.  Perhaps it is the cold therefore?

PS Love the photos both above!

Thanks for the replies. I've had a good look at it again today and yes, there is some frost scorch, it's never grown to a particularly nice shape so when it's a bit warmer I'll move it to against a wall, it'll be happier there and it's rampant fuchsia neighbour will fill the space.
I live in rubber gloves, Tim....
