Scrap metal

We have been clearing out our cellar today as we are going to have it insulated. My husband has finally agreed to clear out a lot of old tools that used to be his Dad's' or even his Grandad's (his dad loved DIY, he doesn't!). We don't even know what some of them are ,so would be difficult to describe if we were to freecycle them. Before we take them to the tip, just wondered if there is likely to be any scrap metal value in any of them- anybody know?

I would get the local auction house to appraise them with a view to selling them. Tools, especially old planes and the like can make big money. :)

OH is a carpenter and tool addict, I'm sure he could identify them for you! ;D If you want to pm me some pics I'll get him to look at them for you.

I have some old planes in the loft that were my grandad's.   :D

DON'T tip them whatever you do - many people collect old tools, me included - take them to a local antique or secondhand shop to get something, however small, for them. On freecycle they will be snapped up even without proper description - taker will probably sell them his/herself.

There is a charity called Tools for Africa if you feel so inclined.  If I could get OH to part with the excess he has we have enough for the entire continent.
But getting him to part...... in the mean time  we can hardly get the bikes in the shed.
There was someone selling second hand -cleaned and sharpened tools at a "green" event we went to. Nice but very pricey.
