We have never seen Goldfinches in the garden before but I suppose its because we are never there during the day unless of course it rains. Have been housebound this week due to a lung infection that I originally thought was pulled muscle. (payback for all those cigs I smoked). They really did brighten the day for me.Poor Tony has been chasing the squirells away all week. I bet they will be glad when we are up and out again

When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Goldfinches are a rare sight in my garden too but i was looking out of the back window, watching the birds in the garden with binoculars, and i spotted not one but too, feeding on the seed heads of my sunflowers. i have to say i was thrilled to see this as i grow the sunflowers as much for the birds as for our enjoyment. I always leave them standing through the winter but so often the seed heads just rot away and don't get eaten. makes the effort of growing them more worthwhile.

Christmas morning was a good morning for seeing birds in the garden (all down to the weather i suppose). As well as the usual sparrows, pigeons collared doves, blackbirds and robins, we had visits from chaffinches blue tits and starlings. My mum also reckons she saw a thrush but i missed it.

I suppose I might be considered lucky because every day for the past few months there have been at least 15 Goldfinches feeding on sunflower hearts in my garden and the number has often been as high as 32. They line up on the overhead electricity cables and then fly down to the feeders.
This morning at 8.00 am there were 35 blackbirds waiting for food.

This morning I had just over 50 Goldfinches on the feeders containing sunflower hearts and on the lawn where I scatter sunflower hearts and mixed small seed.   They very very rarely eat niger seed.
About 35 Siskin yesterday at one time.

In previous years they have always gone to my neighbour's garden and I noticed they put out pure sunflower seed rather than mixed, so I splashed out this week and am hoping they will find their way here!
