I think that there is always room for variation in a pie. James martin's twist on the topping for a cottage pie is one I shall have to try on the kids. Potatoe and Parsnip mash is one way of getting them to eat more veg. :P

Maybe I could try this over the next week to see if they go for it without telling them what is in there. ;D

Swede is lovely mashed in with the potatoes too.  And you could lose a courgette in the meat bit if you wanted.

sweet potato is very nice as is the addition of swede to normal mash as small said or a spoonful of horseradish sauce.
you may be a king or a little street sweeper but sooner or later you dance with de reaper.

celeriac mashed with spuds is awesome!

but, difficulty in finding fresh cottages at this time of year?
You couldn't make it up!

 ;D
we also do butternut squash/potato mash , parsnip/potato or celeriac/potato  :)

When I haven't time or energy to prepare fresh swede I use Aunt Bessie's frozen ready  mashed swede and carrots.  Works well for me.
Thanks for the suggestion of celeriac.  I have some on the allotment so must try it in mash.

I am not a vegetarian but there are some vege meals that I love. One of them is red dragon pie, which is a vege cottage pie. Adzuki beans cooked as the base & when my granddaughter was 1ish it was her favourite meal. I used to mash carrots or swede with the potatoes. The whole meal cost £1 & that was with all organic ingredients.

Well,
With all these variations on a basic one pot meal I think a recipe book could be put together with meat and veg alternatives.
Keep it up and we shall have the widest variety of cottage pies in the world.
Then all we have to do is grow the veg and try out the differnet ones that we all come up with.
