Does anyone else have trouble growing red onions, this is my second year growing them and again this year they have gone over before they are golf ball size, they have stored reasonably well but are very small. My Sturon and stuttgarten have always grown to a reasonable size and are treated in exactly the same way.

our overwinter red sets usually go to seed so have started growing long red from seed, they are great and none have bolted for the second year  :)

I have some unnamed ones from Wilko (sets) which aren't doing well- sound just like yours. I don't think the dry weather has helped. Last year I had Red Baron from Poundland that did much better, but I think generally reds are gharder to grow than whites.

I've grown Long Red Florence for the last couple of years, growing them as small clusters (5-6 seeds in a module, plant them out without splitting. Yes ther onions are smaller but you get a lot of them..l.. From previous experience reds are always harder to grow to a decent size than whites, but at least LRF getsx you a decent crop. I always found red sets bolted a lot easier than whites too

My red onions have gone to seed again for the second year running. So have my caulis. I dont think im going to bother with either next year as its just a waste of time and space.

My Winter & Summer have gone to seed this year :'( better look next year eh. ::)

I have found Red Electric onions pretty reliable in the past, however I only grew a few this year in a new bed and they did not do so well.. :-\

Like Chris, I have discovered LRF onions grown in clumps do very well, and 'Pink Torpedo' (no snickering in the back there...) have done fantastically and are looking more like banana shallots, so I shall definitely grow those again.
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

My red onions did better last year and this year are also looking better than my whites!! Last year my red baron onions were huge. This year I planted them closer together but they are looking beautiful!!
