On the 'velvet tissue' website you can order a free silver birch/rowan or scots pine tree. Don't know how to do links, sorry. Perhaps someone else can.

http://www.velvettissue.com/campaign...laim-tree.aspx  I tried!

Very strange! I've ordered myself a little Rowan... I'm sure I can find a home for it somewhere...  ::)

Surely some docks would be more useful then?  :P

asked for a scotts pine :)

OberonUK

I asked for a silver birch because I have some friends who are having a silver anniversary in November and I thought it would be an unusual and appropriate gift! Is it wrong that it is free? It's the thought that counts, isn't it? Or am I just too cheap?

irnhed

@OberonUK - No, perfectly fine that it's free.  Maybe you can make a label for it, and attach with silver ribbon to make it more personal.

We plant a tree on our childrens' 'Naming Day', which we do as part of their first birthday party.

My son has a Japanese maple, my daughter a Cherry blossom, and I've ordered a Rowan for number three - who is due this October.

We'll have a year to grow it on in a pot, before our 'guide parents' help plant it out in (probably) October 2011.
I'd rather be digging my plot

thanks for the link, I have ordered a rowan, and will donate it to the woodland trust as they are in the process of planting a new forrest Heartwood very near to me and are regularly doing tree planting days. :)

Being inspired by Chelsea, I've ordered a silver birch.  Thanks for the link. :)

tonybloke

ordered the scots pine, we already got a 25ft silver birch (it was a 18" tall wedding pressie) ;D
You couldn't make it up!

greenfists

Thanks for this. I've ordered a silver birch.
Mrs Greenfists has always wanted one, apparently.
I like the way that they are all native species so they will fit in as far as wildlife etc.
Still going to use Sainsburys recycled paper though I'm afraid.

Thank you - I've asked for a silver birch to be sent to a friend - guerrilla gardening of a kind :)

That means I could apply for one for me too as I have a spare email address  ;)

It says they grow 15- 30 metres - would it be possible to keep a silver birch smallish by pruning somehow - maybe 4-6 metres high?
