Typical isn't it, just as my new powerful astronomical telscope arrives, you cannot even see to the bottom of the garden because of the rain!
And before you say it, you cannot see any houses through the window in which the telescope is situated, only fields, trees and sky. Well you could if it was not pouring down!

As if we'd suggest that you would use your new telescope for anything other than stargazing Eric - perish the thought ;)  ;D :)

We've had beautiful starry skies at night lately. It's just a pity it's too cold to go out and look at them for more than 5 minutes! Is this a serious hobby then, Eric?

Palustris

Could be, could be. Replace coming on here anyway.

You dont mean that Eric  :o  you would miss some of us lots you know you would :D ;) :).

Mrs Ava

Are you going to be meteor spotting tonite then Eric?  I heard on the news you should be able to see at least 10 an hour!  I shall make a hot toddy and sit out for a while with the sprogs, see what we can see.  ;D

Father Christmas is bringing my stepdaughter a telescope for Chrimble, I shall of course have to help her get a good view of the night sky and study the sky for her when she isn't here!  :D ;D

At least yours, Emma, will be the right way up. Eric's will be upside down. Need a special sort of brain for that?? = Tim

Palustris

The images on this telescope are not upside down. The sighting lens produces an inverted image, but that is only used to position the thing correctly. There is a site http://www.fourmilab.ch/solar/solar.htmlwhich provides star charts for any given latitude and longitude and time of day or better night so that at least one can put a name to that which one is viewing.

You need to speak to my sister. She's got the brains in the family - she has a PhD in astrophysics and works for the European Space Agency.  :o Her first telescope was made out of a drainpipe. She also took some wonderful long exposure pictures with dad's camera - point it at the North Star and you get a circle of the stars around it as the earth revolves. and also pictures of lunar eclipses. Gorgeous!
gone to pot :D

Palustris

And not a star or a metoer or even the moon in the sky!
