Hi Brian, and welcome!
I don't grow herbs inside, but I can tell you that my children both love fennel.
They like picking and eating both the leaves and seeds.
Not sure whether it would grow indoors - but anything's worth a try.

Sarah.

what about some mint roots, potted up for the winter? you get the smell and you can use them in cooking- i guess whether your kids would bei nterested depends on how old and involved they are??
are you limited to herbs?

thanks for the advice, I am actually going into a school (ages 9-11) and showing them how to grow the herbs and how to introduce them into diets (essentially, healthy eating) but also promoting the fine art of growing your own food ???

;DHi Brian, have you tried growing cress? We used to do it for the kids, in empty egg shells, it grows like hair...you don't have to use egg shells, damp cotton wool works, but its one of those things the kids can cut and put in sandwiches themselves.

Would have to be basil for us, my kids love the stuff! Oh and chives too!  DP
We don't inherit the earth, we only borrow it from our children.

Cor, you lot all beat me to it!  I was going to suggest cress, basil and chives as they are a must for me.  The softer annual herbs all seem to germinate quite quickly and are all soooo fragrant.  I have oregano running riot in my garden, along with mint and angelica, but they are so attractive, bee magnets and great in the kitchen that I don't care!

Good for you encouraging kids to try eating different things and growing their own!

Why stick just to herbs?-try showing them how to `sprout` seeds like mung beans, fenugreek and even peas-pea shoots are the new black just now.

Val, I haven't eaten cress for years  :(  Brian, you could stuff the toes of an old pair of tights with compost till they're head shaped, cut off the excess tights, get the kids to make silly faces for the front of the tight heads, then sow the cress seeds for hair. Jings! I could become a Blue Peter presenter! Here's one I made earlier ...

Spurdie

Chives would make great hair! Very Robert Smith from the Cure!  ;D

:)You've missed your vocation, you don't collect cardboard boxes and string do you?

Spurdie

YES I DO!  You never know when you might need them! I must admit I am a bit of a hoarder. If ever there was a nuclear war, I would manage to keep myself amused making important inventions with toilet rolls. Providing I survive, of course.

Spurdie - I'm glad I'm not the only nutter! I can't bear to throw things away; I can't stand the waste and you never know when it could come in handy. I have far more toilet rolls than I could ever grow sweetpeas or sweetcorn (what else can I grow in them? Peas? beans?)
gone to pot :D

derbex

I start my beans in loo rolls, although Mrs D. has persuaded me to wait until the papare's finished  ;D
