Bird ID is this a Redwing? and a few I do know the name of

Very excited because a new bird appeared in my garden! (if I can still remember how to post pics) there were quite a few birds about today esp finches

so is this a Redwing?

thankyou I thought it was but pictures in books often look different  don't they?
I live in quite a large housing estate and these are took through the front windows
so I am thrilled to get anything a different from starlings and sparrows

We've had a fieldfare in the garden for 3 days now. I do wish it would realise that it wastes more energy than it consumes by chasing the other birds & the starlings aren't going anywhere. We've also had our first mistle thrush in the garden. First sighting of the bullfinch today, he usually arrives around mothers day. A quick visit from the reed bunting. Quite an eventful few days birdwise ;).

Definitely a Redwing. Just been looking at the identification pages on the RSPB website after a quite incredible visitation in our garden at lunchtime today, when at least half a dozen thrush type birds appeared in the garden, not far from the house.

I am certain it was at least 2 if not 3 different species, including at least one Redwing. The others seemed to be a mix of song and either mistle thrushes or fieldfares. One of the Song Thrushes has since been back a couple of times to feast on some cotoneaster berries.

Couldn't believe my eyes at one point. I ran upstairs to get my camera but they were all gone by the time I had got it. I was alone so no-on else will beleive me  when I tell them!

I wonder if they will be back?

Fieldfares and redwings often visit in flocks, and often together, though fieldfares in our garden at least are very bad-tempered and spend a lot of time driving away others. We have several cooking apple trees and I always rake the fallers into heaps for these winter visitors.  We've seen thirty or forty at a time feasting. I just wish I were camera-savvy!

we'v had a first ever visit from a songthrush as well and the redwing has made 1or 2 more visits
the Blackbirds (loads) seem to spend more time and energy chasing each other away then eating. I worry about them and the chaffinches as they prefer to stay on the ground and there are a lot of cats around' fortunatly big fat Bob hates snow  and restricts his birdwatching to the windowsill

we had a fieldfare visit today, amongst all the other birds, we had 6 blackbirds at once, and they weren't chasing each other, just getting on with eating!! ;)
