Starter Plants

My starter plants of sprouting broccoli and kale arrived today....am now panicing as per usual, because the place I was going to plant them (new spot so hopefully club root free) is still full of sweetcorn and squash :o Never really had much sucess before with brassicas because of the clubroot :'( but now I have this new area I thought I would try again.
Soooooooo  can I put them into small pots until the area is ready?(about a month) or will this give them a check in growth and so they wont grow over the winter? Many thanks   Dottie P.

I'll let you know next year -I just put my Kale into pots as the spot wasn't ready yet. I don't see why it should be a problem as long as they keep growing, if they slow down you may need to pot them up, but I'd have thought you'd be ok for a month.

Wiser heads may know more though.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with brassicas. I believe that one method of overcoming clubroot is to keep the brassica plants in pots before planting out so that the roots and plant get a head start before being attacked by the disease.

Not sure about Kale.

Or, less trouble, you could 'heel' them in in a shady spot?

Hubby hates the slow large droplets of rain Tim! ;D  To heel in do I just dig a trench, pop them in and backfill?

Yes.  But if you do decide to pot them, don`t use soilless compost, which encourages clubroot.

Hugh, just curious,why does the soilless encourage clubroot? One would think it would be the other way around!
