Best Tasting Variety: Butternut Squash

Well, so what do you think ??   :-\

There's butternuts and buttermuts!!  And recently I've been growing the round Jaspee de Vendee instead !!

But with your help we could work out which is more tasty ... so on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best) how would you rate what you have grown ???   ;D

I have been told "Harrier F1", a bush variety from T&M is good,  producing 4-5 squash per plant too.

going back to butternut this year, I just grew our own pumpkins and small ones this year, they're ok but not as nice a taste..so, just called butternut from kings  ;D

I grew pumpkins too because I had the space but wouldn't grow them again (tasteless) next year i am growing squashes instead!! I have seeds of baby blue hubbard and and the *red onion* squash...will also be growing butternuts!! Not sure which ones though will wait on direction from Jeaninne :P on the butternuts!!

Duke, there are many pumpkins just as there are squash, most are best used just as decor but there are a few who have a great taste. I grow very few pumps but I do grow Small Sugar, the very best for pumpkin pie and a good eater too so don't give up on them as a veggie, read a bit and you will find some good tasting ones that will decorate too.XX Jeannine

Borrow, The Compleat Squash from the library, Amy Goldman (her spelling) it is expensive but a good book, try it first though. Sorry about the recipe, it has been packed with everything else and I can't find it here, when I eventually unpack i will post it.XX Jeannine

I got a pack of mixed squash seeds from the Italian seed company had one that was like a rounded dumb bell with dark green skin that had the feeling of sand paper with a few yellow strips and it was lovely roasted The flesh was very like a butternut but with both ends bulbous and seeds in one  of them but the seeds were all empty  >:(

I intend to do taste tests on my Butternuts and Winter Squash varieties shortly.
Just for clarification, jaspee de vendee is not a Butternut variety as it is derived from a different family of curbits.

I can't comment on taste, but i am growing butternut's next year called Avalon f1 hybrid

These are almost the last to be harvested. Still 3 unripe Crown Prince on the vine, but they probably won't ripen. I've grown the Waltham Butternut for the past three years and they keep a very long time and taste great.
