That's massive, Is it an artichoke or a cardoon?

rosebud

Its a cardoon Robert, & has at least 47 thisle heads on it!!!!! ;D ;D

Robert_Brenchley

Mine is in its second season, and is currently about three feet high with half a dozen buds and thousands of blackfly, which are having a riot at the moment on various things. I don't think they'll do it much harm.

Mrs Ava

Wow Rosebud, that is amazing!  Mine on the allotment is doing well and has masses of flowers, but it isn't that huge.  So....does this mean you won't be wanting any cuttings??

Chilipepper

can a novice ask what it is?

tim

Ours is close on 6' tall now, but always gets discoloured & dying leaves. Only has about 10 heads.

Is that just dryness or.........??

Robert_Brenchley

It's a cardoon, which is a type of edible thistle, closely related to the globe artichoke. You blanch the stems and use them in soups and the like. Most people just grow it as an ornamental.
