I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I think generally these firms do a good job but will press on with their agenda no matter what. I know of several lawns ruined because they were treated during a drought, I know of another that was overfed resulting in a massive surge of lush growth and a consequent plethora of thatch. Whatever - you'll be mowing twice a week...

They typically charge £14 for a 100m² lawn but as greenthumb is a franchise I expect the quality of the service may vary as not everyone who signs up for a franchise buisness pays attention to their training course. You would need to get some feedback from people who have used the franchise operating in your area rather than the company in general.

In the long run you may be better off investing in a copy of The Lawn Expert by by D.G. Hessayon you can get it from £0.33 + £2.75 P+P on amazon marketplace remember if you click on the shop button on this forum then search for the item you can buy things from amazon & support this site at the same time.
This book will tell you everything you need to know about how to keep your lawn in great condition.

One of my customers uses a professional lawn care company and she swears by them.  Her lawn is constantly green and completely weed free.  They come and scarify and aerate and fertilise and whatever else and for her, they do a great job.

I've cut a lot of grass in the last year, some of which has had this treatment, and the best grass of all is mine. Dirty old unimproved field grass cut with a manual push mower and the cuttings left on. At least it was the best until a mole liked it so much he dug it all up for me, but it's coming back.
Google god st francis grass and see what comes up. Read it and laugh, or weep, but it's true.

You mean this I take it.

God's thoughts on lawns.

GOD: Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect, no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But all I see are these green rectangles.

ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers "weeds" and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD: Grass? But it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees, only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it -- sometimes twice a week.

GOD: They cut it? Do they then bail it like hay?

ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir. Just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

GOD: Now let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir.

GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. Plus, as they rot, the leaves form compost to enhance the soil. It's a natural circle of life.

ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD: No. What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter and to keep the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

GOD: And where do they get this mulch?

ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.

GOD: Enough. I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

ST. CATHERINE: Dumb and Dumber, Lord. It's a real stupid movie about ...

GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

Hello

Green thumb just came out and checked my lawn he did various tests and said it needs some work but salvageable he suggested that try it for a year until my shoulder is better and see what happens, it costs £14.00 per visit min of 4 per year also it needs hollow-tine aeration in sept/oct at a cost of £30 as my gound is is so compacted so just under the £100 mark for the year, so i have signed up and they are starting next week there is a few jobs that i have to do 1) get some dog rocks for my dogs i stops scorching, 2) cut the grass to a 1"  then when the treatment has been down a day or two i have to get some top soil and seed and overseed my bear patches and water like mad if dry and then in august the second treatment followed by the aeration in sept/oct and the 3rd treatment around dec and the final one in march/april.

Yeah that's him Baccyman. Nice one.

Greenthumb have been looking after my front and back lawns for about 8 years and I have never had a reason to complain.  They come when we are at work and put their bill through the door so I never see him.  Every Spring and Autumn they suggest treatments, but are never pushy about getting things done and to be honest, we only get the quarterly feed etc done which costs £13.00 per visit.  I have recommended them to lots of my friends and they have also been pleased with the results.    Lots of people comment on how well my lawn looks, so I wouldn't hesitate in getting them out.

Hope that helps.

Brogus, my Mum has had them for a year now.....she is thrilled with the results....think it costs her £120 per year, plus extra for scarification etc.     Though one of the ladies I work for has been having them for 6 months and her lawn  is still full of moss, complained and the chap is going to go visit and access.
My Mum just wishes they cut lawns too! ;)
