I rang my local parish today.  Living in a large village attached to a town I thought I would see if I could put my name down for an allotment.

My parish has never had allotments and has no plans to do so in the future  ???

Dont they legally have to provide some land somewhere??

Would love some feedback on this.

The local authority is bound by law to provide Allotments if requested by a set number of people, but the snag seems to be there is no time limit to when they do...

A minimum of 6 budding allotmenteers is what is required then they have to provide by law. When you win.... they could set them up anywhere in their district.

According to our local council they only thing they HAVE to do if several people ask for an allotment is to consider finding a site, they are not legally required to provide allotments. Don't know if that is the same everywhere.

Hiya, Janreb, welcome to the site
I was reading about someone who had a word with a farmer, they got land leased to them for 50 plots  :)

Hi
We are thinking of doing the same - I'm lucky enough to have a plot but we have 27 peole on the waiting list, and no sign of it getting any smaller.

Its the same all over the UK, I have a plot but have been in a fiight with our local council for over a year to get them to provide more allotments.

Parish Council's have a duty to provide allotment gardens where there is an unsatisfied demand. Page 6 of Parish Councillors guide need 6 parrishioners to show need.See in local library or suggest ring local authority. Our one is very helpful. Good luck and hope you are succesful.
