hi all well I'm not a happy bunny i e mailed my council today and have just had a reply NO FUNDS to remove the asbestos IT was also pointed out that if it wasn't broken it was safe well it is broken up and i dint want to wait till next year for the funds to become available god I'm so sodding mad >:( :( wot do we pay community charge for this is the first time Ive ever had any dealings with the useless council oooooh what am i to do!!! sorry for going off on one but someone must know how i feel? so what can i do Ive asked nicely no good please help

Hi there,
When i was trying to get an allottment i went to the local councils monthly amenities meeting ( i was the only member of public there) and made my point face to face with the councillors which firstly made me feel better and i actually got a positive response which led to me getting a plot in 6 months rather than the standard e- mail response of 2 year waiting list.
It may not work for you but its worth a try.

Asbestos is horrendously expensive to get rid of. We had a skip from the council specifically for asbestos and it cost them over £1200. Whilst you may not have transport, most areas have facilities to take bonded asbestos by appointment at a designated disposal centre. The sheets must be double wrapped in polythene and you are then allowed to transport it yourself.

You could try your local Health & Safety Executive, but I think they only cover workplaces.

PS - Course there are no funds to help you clear the asbestos.  Our dearly beloved newly elected Tory Council is planning on dropping all the previous administrations ideas for extra investment in the allotments in Lincoln in favour or reintroducing weekly landfill bin collections. ::)  It shows what a sham Cameron's greeness is.

A lot of what people think is asbestos roofing( the corrugated stuff) is actually bonded cement.

It all depends how old it is.

There are two types of asbestos, the most dangerous one is blue asbestos. This was used for lagging pipes in buildings etc. I believe it was also used in motor vehicle brake shoes.

The other type of asbestos is usually found in cement asbestos sheets. Buildings which have roofs and walls of these sheets are usually safe if not disturbed. The danger occurs when you start removing it, do not do it unless you have made provision for disposal.

just read in the echo about that great innit  :( :( what do they expect newbies to do with all the junk they take on when they get a "new" allotment and what a  joke the bit about leaving your plot level and rubbish free is (its in the rules junk !!!) mine was a jungle of weeds and scrap had to get a scrap man to come out four times to remove it all I'm not asking for much just that they remove the asbestos still working on that i think Ive got a fight on and things could get dirty!!!

Hi there THWW. If I've interpreted rightly that you're in Lincoln, I wish you best of luck with the council! I found them extraordinarily unhelpful when I wanted some asbestos removed. Admittedly, this was from my own property but despite being a lone parent of four under tens (all of whom could easily have got to said asbestos without my vigilence) they didn't want to know. I ended up paying Rilmac almost £300 to dispose of it for me!

Yes I'm in Lincoln and this is the first time Ive had any dealings with are ever so helpful council it doesn't matter what i ask for like the blue bags to put the asbestos in the answer is the same NO it makes my blood boil
