Sparrows

For the last few years there's been concern about the lack of sparrows around. This year there seems to be lots...Nature at work  ?

had six babies lined up on the fence this morning with the parents dashing back and forth to the feeders  ;D  thats the last of at least 4 broods using our garden  :)

Loads more sparrows than usual in my garden this year, too - but the starlings, usually by far the most numerous species, have completely vanished!!!! Very odd!

all the starlings are in my garden. either sitting next to the pond staring at it or waiting for their parents in trees, while the parents upset the robins by nicking all the  mealworms...

got lots of baby sparras here too.  a big old mog tried to jump after them yesterday reminding me i had to replace the cat scarer batteries.

the babies are really inquisitive and so cute to watch.

also got our summer tits back: blues and greats but not seen a coal tit yet.

as far as i remember from last year the baby starlings were a bit later than the sparras.  i saw plenty of starlings by morrisons last night but none in the garden yet.

Some hedge sparrows here.

I saw a dead blue tit this morning (an adult), probably hunting for grubs for the babs.   I hope its partner is feeding them and that the little ones will be OK.  Am always saddened by dead birds, this one looked like a little jewel.  :'( :'(

daily visits by lots and lots of sparrows and starlings. sparrow nesting above our guttering somewhere too...

the coal tits that nested have now moved on, the occasional great tit and blue tits as well (though the pair that usually nest in one of the boxes didn't appear this year)

Wish we could attract some chaffinch, greenfinch and goldfinch though. (have a niger seed feeder for the latter) but alas nothing as of yet :(

Sparra's.  Bane of my mornings.  Bl***y dozens of 'em everywhere.  Breeding like rabbits in my neighbours roof space ( alongside the starlings and collard doves).  No sleep here after dawn & then its all day long skwawking in droves.  And to add insult to injury they're roosting in my very expensive swift box, put up by OH at great personal danger to replace the nest we removed when we had the roof done.

Collard doves = pigeons. Shoot on sight!

but they're so much more polite than the feral's (which i appear to have succeeded in keeping them out of the garden as they can't get to the feeders).  the collared ones look so beautiful  ::)

now the B52 bomber Wood Pigeons, they're another matter.  I've now got a packed of barbeque skewers planted to deter them from landing.  if one gets spiked, he's going on the BBQ !
