Just came back from a short break to Sweden. Lovley place but a bit cold.

The weekend was really nice so I got my Estima seed potatoes planted (21 planted on the plot).

I still have loads of them left and used a green bin for another 4.

I now have 7 black buckets with the Rocket potatoes growing, but not too sure when to lift them?

Anyway here are some pics....

everything looks really healthy, chris..those black buckets look familiar..we usually wait 'til the potatoes flower, then see if there are any worth eating under the plant, very gently  ;D

MrsKP

we're all growing black buckets this year !!!  lol

nice pics chris.  just imagine how many more rows you get in if you got rid of the grass.

:P

think of it this way chris,

how much time do you spend actually on the grass part?
marks out of ten on how much you enjoy it.

how much time do you spend in your veg patch?
marks out of ten on how much you enjoy it

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
just a couple more feet dug up would give you sooooo much more enjoyment........and we'll leave you alone for a few months before we start again.  ;D  it looks really good.x

ChrisG,

Is that one spud per black bin???

Have you put holes in the bottom??

I ask only because i have a couple of extra spuds which have been sent my way so i was going to raid asda and see what buckets i have and then drop them off at the mother in laws ( shes on her own and does not drive so some fresh spuds would be a boon!! ) when there nearly ready.

Not sure of the quantities per pot but holes in the bottom plus a some shards etc to help drainage are recommended in all I've read. There's a good thread here and I'd note what philcooper says about removing the flowers and watering with eg seaweed extract.

Yes it is a lovely place Chris but if you think it is cold now you should come back in January! Mind you the weather is trying to be better - it is gorgeous today and I am out in a t shirt washing the greenhouse. A far cry from Sunday when we had a heavy snowfall!

As far as the potatoes are concerned I have just started chitting them and am hopeful that the soil will be warm enough to plant in about three weeks.

Hi Simon,

Well we were out on the Saturday and it was sleet/snow. But we had a great time anyway.

Nice to talk to you.

If you can't be a good example -- then you'll just have to be a horrible warning....

QuoteI still have loads of them left

I think I would have fitted another row in there Chris!

Just as a matter of interest how far apart are your rows?

I am impressed with how far things have progressed considering how far north you are.

Can't recall things being so far on for the time of year when I lived in Fife.

Although if the weather has been anything like it was when I spent some time up there in mid February it might not be so surprising.

I'm afraid I tend to play the historical weather scene (my diaries) rather than what has happened this past winter and recently.

I hope I am wrong but I don't think winter is over yet!!

As I say ; I am impressed!!

Chris Graham

TeeGee -

Thanks very much for the kind comments, I too am quite inpressed at how things are growing. Could be my garden is sheltered well?

Potato seeds are planted 24 inches between rows and about 30 inches between in each row (they are to be my main crop).

You are probably right about the winter not being over, glad i bought some fleece.

;)

Cheers  ;)
