quite a lot of our PSB this year is bitter does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? Does it go bitter the longer it is kept before use?

Interesting one this, evidently some people have a difference in genes that make broccoli and other bitter foods taste more bitter. But this isn't what you are saying, you comment that it seems to taste more bitter this year. Haven't noticed this myself, but there might be reasons for the broccoli tasting more bitter to you, if you are particularly sensitive to it. One is that using salt  blocks the bitter taste a little, so if by any chance you've cut down on your salt intake, this might be the reason. Some say that a little butter softens the bitterness, so again, if you used to cook it with butter and now don't, that could be the reason.
On the other hand, it could be a different variety of broccoli?

And yes also the broccoli can get more bitter if it's stored too long.

glow777

thanks - it must be the storage then, cooked the same as normal and its been the same packet of seeds for the last 4 years! In fact I predict the packet will last

2000 seeds / 12 plants per year
=166 years!

Hi Glow, we have eaten most of ours.  If you would like to send me a very large bunch I will try it to see if it is bitter   :)
Just one more polytunnel, just one more chicken coop.

Our PSB is ok, (what little we have that is) Gonna put more in next year. last night we had a roast chicken dinner and I decided to use the last of it up. Picked all that was left, gave the rabbits a bit and cooked the rest. There was more than I thought, but put it on the plates just the same. We were all up in the early hours of this morning frightened to death to trump just in case lol. Won't be doing that again
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"
