Radishes

How come, when two years ago I was getting regular crops like those shown below from half seed trays,  for the last two years, using exactly the same methods, I only manage the odd one or two?   ???  G x

Sorry can't advise but can admire the lovely radish.  Mine always have funny little holes in the leaves and big slug bites out of them :'(

I didnt get one radish through last year so I know how you feel. :(

Could have been a duff batch of seed, it does happen! Mind you, they don't like to germinate when it's very hot, and it was very hot last year, so that could have been it.

I planted mine straight into the ground with potting compost Georgie and had loads come up all shapes and sizes, mind you they didn't look as pretty as yours.   ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for all your replies.   It hasn't been a germination problem, rather that no matter how shallow or deep I plant the seed, the red bit of the root keeps coming above the soil and fails to bulk up.  I've even tried earthing them up to no avail.   :( 

I can't plant them in the ground because I have no room.  Maybe as Jenny suggests it's a dodgy batch of seed.  These were Scarlet Globe (I need a short variety) but perhaps I should try something else?

I had my first pulling of radishes yesterday from a frame. They were planted 4 weeks ago exactly!. Plant the seeds carefully one inch apart, 50 every fortnight for a constant supply. That was a tip I learned from my late father, I used to mock his obsession, now eveyone mocks mine!

Do you usually actually grow them in the seedtray Georgie, or just start them off?  I've never had much success with them though I got some seeds from Lidls - big white ones & they did very well.

I start planting mine first week of April and then every two/three weeks.

Just sow 50 or so seeds in a 1 meter trough, and leave in a slug free part of the garden

I grew T&M Mirabeau in trays all last summer, lovely french breakfast type. They were delicious til high summer, when they went all woody coz I left them out in the baking heat.  ::)

I understand your frustration. I sowed radishes in my glasshouse about 4 weeks ago, I am pulling them now. I also sowed some from the same pack two weeks later and they haven't germinated yet.Go figure!!!!!
