popped into woolies yesterday they are selling fruit trees, raspberry canes, and currants. i bought a stella cherry tree for £9.99 with a free silver birch tree. does anyone know if i would be able to limit the size (its 4 foot at the mo) or train it ?

What size would you like it to be?

You could do a bit of 'bonsai-ing' by restricting the root growth e.g sink a bottomless bucket/barrel into the planting area and grow your tree in the confines of the container, this might work!

I have a cherry, Summer Sun, and have managed to keep it at about 5 ft tall. The leader was cut after about 4 years, and there are just 4 branches, 2 either side of the trunk. This pic was taken late last spring:

wow, Jennym, that looks really healthy, we've just planted one today so look forward to ours looking like that  :)

Si

Wow! Do you get lots of fruit from it?

OliveOil

woolworths or wilkinsons???

jennym

I think it was Woolies I got it from. It does produce lots of lovely sweet cherries, but unless you net the trees, the birds eat them really fast - I got about FIVE this year. Enjoyed every one  ;D  The tree itself is now about 7 years old. To be honest, I get more cherries from the trees by the roadside! But they aren't so large.
Did manage to get cranberry plants from woolies this year £2.49 and they look pretty healthy, with plenty of stems - it's the cheapest I've seen them.

Si

That is a good price. My local garden centre sells them for £4.50!
