Tumbling tomatoes ??

Was hoping for some advice about how you grow yours.  I tried these last year - tumbler and gartenperle but with little success (a few tasty toms but not many).  I grew them in in a medium to large sized hanging basket from Wilkos.  How many should be grown in a  basket?

I grew them 2 years ago with only moderate success so last year I did them in pots where they tumbled over the sides & had amazing crops from 6 plants.  Personally I think there isn't enough soil in a standard hanging basket & it can't hold enough moisture during the heat of the day.  They look pretty in baskets though.

I cheated and stood the bottom of the basket in a shallow bucket, cheating I know, but we got a really good crop  :)

i dont really rate these tomatoes.  I found the garden pearl tomatoes very hard to pollinate and set and when they do set the fruit is poor colour and flavour, they are off pink and tasteless in my view.

Much prefer the progressive F1 varieties like Sungold.  Very reliable and fantastic taste.  Well worth paying for in my view. 

Another orange one i like is a beefsteak called Caro rich F1, has ten times the normal rates of beta carotene, and is orange all the way through.

I have grown and saved seeds from Whippersnapper... lots of small pinkish fruit on very lax plants... had them in the ground so the slugs had a few but still loads..

I grew them last year for the first time and they were great.

Used a pot instead of a basket and got hundreds.

I used a very large pot as well. They just kept on going towards the ground. I kept raising the pots higher . The variety was Tumbler, but Gardeners Delight tasted much better.

Last year I grew Tumbler (red) and Tumbling Tom (yellow) in plastic hanging baskets which have a reservoir at the bottom, hung them at the end of the clothes line and had a really good crop from both.     Easy to water and even  easier to pick - few made it to the table!!!     Hope to try Gartenperle this year.

i grew gartenperle toms last year in hanging baskets.

2 plants in each basket hung outside my lottie shed which gets the sun all day.

I watered when at the plot, so some days they had no water at all.

lots of very tasty pink toms. will grow again the same way this year / shades x

I grew an yellow ripening variety of tumbler last year (I don`t know what variety but I may have a note in my shed so I may edit this) The quality and the quantity were fantastic, I was harvesting into October and I will grow tumblers again this year. But... there had to be a but... I wouldn`t grow them in a hanging basket. Last years crop is even more amazing because I almost killed the plants over and over again because I couldn`t keep them well watered, they seemed to be always withered and dried out. I also dropped them, tipped them over, and generally mistreated them. This year as already written I think I will grow them in big tubs.
