Banana Tale

 ??? A guy at work told me that bananas actually come off the trees in their native growning areas, black. they are then stored in a dark room until they turn yellow. apparently we westerners will only eat them when they are yellow. I think this is rubbish, can you enlighten me please?

Bit early for April Foolery, isn't it?
There are many varieties of bananas, but the yellow ones most familiar to us start off green. Show him these piccies and ask him if he's as green as he's cabbage-looking!

I had them growing last year on my banana in my conservatory, and they start of green and turn yellow.  Black is once they are over ripe.

yup....i used to live in a country where they grow bananas....and god knows what that guy is on about.

they're green, then turn yellow. there are some other varieties like the purple or red bananas but most of those aren't as palatable as the common yellow bananas.

Bananas only turn black when they're over-ripe.

Most of those sold in the shops are green, and only ripen when kept for about 7 days. I knew a greengrocer once who kept all the "sad" bananas (ones that had turned dark brown) for his own use. He said they were the best. In those days the greengrocers would not accept bananas if they were green, because people would'nt buy them.
