Hee hee hee! And probably bitter to boot.  :P Think positive - now they're cooking lettuces, Tim!
This year it's squash.

Mrs Ava

I have a row like that Tim.  Will they taste okay do you think, or shall I fling them on the compost heap?

Squashfan

usually they get tough and bitter once they start doing that, EJ. I compost but occasionally chuck them into a stir fry....
This year it's squash.

gardenqueen

You could always use them for wine-hic! hic!  ;D

Curryandchips

I reckon they think they are climbing beans  ;D
The impossible is just a journey away ...

tim

Cook them? Bin them? NO WAY - they are as flavoursome as any lettuce I've had. And crisp.

At least Sprouty's haven't gone over yet.

gavin.

how about 5 foot of lettuce? (on left of picture)

redimp

I like them when they have blown a bit.  Nothing wrong with a bit of bitterness in a lettuce. :)

I don't mind them either, when in with sorrel and other leaves... now I've managed to grow some Para cress this year that is really weird...
Shall we have a tallest lettuce competition?????

I had some lettuces like yours Tim but fed them to the chickens.    ;D

Gavin, what a well laid out plot.  I would love to see some more pictures too.  Did you landscape it yourself?

gavin.

Thanks for your kind comments. here are a couple more pictures I took this morning:

I spent a fair few weekends over the winter removing much of the lawn and putting in the beds and paths (and the greenhouse.) Things were looking slightly better a month ago but the garlic, potatoes and a few other bits have gone now and the squash seem intent on taking over the garden. There are still a couple of areas to finish off but I'm happy with it. ;D

that what I did with mine last year ;D for a changed keep it in the vase.
Can you see the one very thin with long long stem ;) Something different ;D

A lettuce is good picked and eaten the same day especialy if you have had rain the night before ( well I did say if). Pick in the morning when the dew has settles and the lettuce are at the maximum firmness. Take home and eat the same day. Perfect! If bolted does not matter. An extra bit of bite in flavoure and texture. I like the fresh crisp taste and harsh taste of a bolted letuce anyway so a few are allowed to bolt.

Be kind to slugs and snails!

I should think you are happy with your lovely plot gavin, inspiring - great structure and obviously much loved. The late summer rampage makes it all the more appealing IMO! ;D
