Hi All,
I found this information on the net during a search for new methods of combating white rot.

PROTECT YOUR CROPS WITH ASPIRIN

Field trials in both the UK and USA have shown that salicylic acid in the form of uncoated soluble aspirin has a beneficial effect on crops.

These trials were conducted in conjunction with The British Society of Plant Pathology and The United States Department of Agriculture.

The findings so far have shown that although plants have no immune system as such, salicylic acid in the form of uncoated soluble aspirin sprayed on plants has the effect of stimulating a defensive response to attack by:-

Insects

Fungi

Bacteria

Viruses

Plants treated with salicylic acid in this form also appear to grow faster and stronger resulting in greater crop potential over untreated plants.

The rate of usage found to be most effective is one and a half tablets to 2 gallons of water.

An extract of Yucca was also added the solution to ensure that the solution adhered to the foliage it was sprayed upon. A mild liquid soap can be used as a substitute to Yucca without detriment to the results as stated.

In the trials it was also noted that seeds sprayed with the solution had a far higher percentage of germination.

I've been using it ever since it was first mooted a few weeks back. Can't lose? But, as usual, comparisons are difficult.

I think it said 80mg tablets - there are so many strengths.
Very difficult to apportion to a 1/2l sprayer!!

Hadn't seen the White Rot connection before - interesting?

tim

Oh, sorry - 81mg - if there is such a beast!!

Trip[le pronged attack then.  Water ground with garlic water the year before and then cover with black plastic during the hottest part of the year to try and starve and cook it to death.  When sown or planted, spray allium crops with aspirin solution.  I am feeling more and more optimistic about my white rot problem. :)

I'm not going to break the ten year isolation as I only have it on one allotment... only five to go!

Well there are 75mg I have one every day to keep my blood in fettle.

The last time I bought them at the chemist they worked out at about 1p apiece.

Hi Tim,
The 81 mg was quoted on the American site but our nearest equivalent would probably suffice for the purpose. ;)

Being an organic type I would only use it as a last resort, but I am mindful of the the fact that we all have our own methods of cultivating and protecting our crops. ;D
