Here we go again.  :( :(

Went into the conservatory last night to do the rounds of the seedlings and found a vine weevil on its back in the middle of the floor waving its legs in the air.

It was an ex-weevil rather quickly, but begs the rather rhetorical questions where did it come from and how did it get in? I inspect every pot I bring in overwinter. Not to mention where are the rest of them?

*sigh*

moonbells, who might have to resort to provado in the fuchsia pots.  Least they wont bother my new seedlings.

Moonbells - did you know that no one has ever found a male vine weevil. They are all female.

worse luck - it's all parthenogenesis.

Bit like aphids, though I think you do get the occasional male.

Moonbells, i used Pravado in all my fuchsias when i put them away last October it is the 1st time everyone of them has survived the BL**dy vine weevil, so from now on that is what i shall do.  I also bought from a garden centre a spray for the dreaded lily beetle, they absolutely destroyed our lovely Lillie's last year and we have picked a couple off already so out came the spray and i just give a very light spray once every couple of weeks now.  I never used to use such things but these vile creatures seem to be breading earlier and have done some damage before we realise they are about.Grrrrrrrrrr!.

Maybe your vine weevil was just a little grub lurking in the compost in one of your pots when you  bought it in last autumn Moonbells - just a thought :-\  I buy the plant protection compost for things like fuchsias and begonias and so far that has helped keep the little blighters at bay >:(

Happy gardening all...........Pat

mm yes I do think they sneaked in like that.

What's currently bugging me is that last night I opened the overflow fridge's door (it's also in the conservatory) and another weevil fell out.

OK - HOW did it get there?

<<boggle>>

(it's now another very ex-weevil)

gggrrrr!  Hate the darn things.  Dread to think how many plants I have lost over the years to vine weevil grubs!  Hate using provado, but have done in the past because what is the point of growing these wonderful things to loose them to these little maggots!  Squished 2 in the conservatory already this spring.  Aren't they pregnant when they are born, well, hatched from their larvae status?  Horrible bugs.  I loathe these more than slugs and snails!

Be kind to slugs and snails!

I was picking out vine weevils today from a pot, blinkin things! And suddenly have masses of lily beetles, was going to take a pic, but what they were up to on my lilies was X rated! :o

teehee DP.  I spotted some doing the 'doo' on my lillies today.  Gathered them all up in a jug and number one daughter and I listened to them squeeking and chittering.  Then I put them on the floor and we jumped on them.  Oh the satisfaction! ;D

Help !

Have a great big ceramic trough by my front door,in it a clematis and a climbing rose. At the front of the trough was a (notice "was") a fuchsia, some campanula and something else I can't remember the name of. All were clinging on by threads. Had a bit of a rummage about and found vine weevil grubs, some that looked like they are busy transforming into beetles. Urgh!  >:(

My clem and rose seem unaffected...so far.  I can't really dig them out and replace all the compost without  probably damaging them so what can I do that is safe for the enviroment.

Nematodes?

Worked a treat for us! Had a bit of a problem a few years ago, OH likes lillies so lads of Pots on a nice South facing patio, virtually no damage now, just the odd weevil and an annual dose...
;D
