I have just discovered my antivirus software is out of date and cannot be updated without buying (at considerable cost) a new version of the software. This is not an option.

Can anyone out there reccomend a good (but available free of charge) antivirus software please? I have found one called 'NoAdware 4.0' but have yet to try it out and dont know how good it is (has anyone got it - what do you think of it?)

I would be grateful for any help you can offer.

Thanks

Does this actualy remove problem files for free as well?. Just discovered NoAdaware will scan for viruses but you have to pay to clean them from your PC!

Its a full program that does everything Nortons anti virus does.

viruses are removed/immunised not just detected.

I use it at home on my 4 pc's (one for each of the family!) and we use the corporate version at work, where I am the IT manager.

I`ve used AVG for five years without any problems  :)

I've been using AVG for the past six months, having had endless problems with Norton.  It seems to do the job and doesn't conflict with anything else as Norton did.  Big thumbs up here too.

We got AVG. It does a great job. * BIG THUMBS UP )

I have installed the AVG software and am trying it out now. If sucessfull I shall be uninstalling Norton and NoAdaware.

Many thanks

You shouldn't have more than one AVirus product on your PC at the same time as they will conflict (especially if one is Norton AV).

They will think that scanning, removing and moving files etc is virus like activity and get into endless machine cycles checking each other for viruses.

If you are testing AVG you can disable Norton by right clicking the icon near your clock and selecting disable.

PS I would look at the scheduled options in AVG as the default is to check the whole computer for viruses after it has been switched on. Although this is good it can slow down the PC.

Hi,

You could use a great pice of software called Clam AV, it's free and open source give it a try.

Many moons (about 5 yrs) ago I had Norton.  I changed over to AVG from Grisoft when my licence ran out and it was better then than Norton and it has got better since (I don't know about Norton now)  I have also tried Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.htmlbut didn't think it was good - all nice skins and image whereas AVG just does what its supposed to do efficiently.  Opinions differ on which is really the best though.
