Hello again.

I wish to plant my cucumber seedlings in a 20 inch diameter pot that is 14 inches deep.

Could I put 3 two metre stakes for them to grow up?

Is this possible or won't there be enough soil to grow them in?  Or am I asking for the impossible?

Thanks

Anna,  I';m not certain haven only grown them outdoors for the first time this year.  I think that would be okay though cos the root system is quite small and they live in growbags quite happily.   You we would need be careful they didn't fall over though.

The cucumbers I grew outside all got mosaic virus :'(, but the ones in the greenhouse were excellent, in grow bags, so I'm siding with Icy, but prepared to jump ship when someone with more know how comes along...!!! ;D Lottie

I wish I could grow cus at this time of year.

You have heat & light?

Icyberjunkie

Sorry to hear that lottie.  I'm still harvesting my last outdoor cucumbers.  Last two just finishing swelling and a a few small ones that'll probably end up being 'gherkinated'  {GG}

Ours are bitter...because we didn't know to take off the male flowers to prevent pollination.  :( But thanks to this site we know for next year.  :)

Well I didn't know either ??? so how why have we been able to enjoy our cuc's as I have done nothing to them except eat them ???

Mrs Ava

I was thinking the same Tim.  Are you planning on growing cucumbers over the winter?  I have 2 left on plants, one at the allotment, and one in number one sons growbag vegetable garden.  He is very proud of it!  ;D

But yes, you can grow them up, as you can lots of squashes.  Makes better use of space, allows good air circulation to the fruits, and prevents them rotting on damp ground.

Hi everyone  :)  I was chucking my cucumber plants away into the compost bin the other day and my OH shouts there's one left on!  it was a beauty  :)  No more left though and the last remaining plant is sadly as dead as a do do.  I'd love to be able to grow them all year but we can't but we look forward to them all the more for next year  :)
I came, I saw, I composted

What variety did you grow? It might have been an all female one? Burpless Tasty Green doesn't seem to go bitter either. We'll be growing those next year.

Wow, sounds like I am on the right track.

I have burpless ones so won't need to worry about taking off male flowers.

They will be in the sun and wind.  But I will tie them to the stakes.

But the flowers raise a question for my broad beans - I'll start another thread.

Thanks everyone :)

Annadl, I may be having a huge dense moment here, but they aren't hardy you know. Or have I missed something? I start mine off in the conservatory in late Feb, even that's quite early I think. Tim, help!! Have I missed something again?!?! Lottie  ;D

Anna's in Australia, isn't she? Seasons are back to front?

Which emphasises the point - if you ask a question, remind us of your area, height, protected or not, heat or not. Some of us forget to check profiles - & many folk don't put this in their profiles.

Annadl

Thanks Tim but I've been signing off AnnaOutOfSync as a reminder to peeps that I'm out of sync with seasons.

Maybe I'll just have to keep reminding I'm from Perth a bit more ;)

Thanks

Annadl, you could have a pic of a cricket bat in your profile to remind us you're in Oz....
oh, hold on, that won't work.  shame ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

No poking Australians with sharp sticks. It may be very funny, but it's not nice. Hee hee.

Thought that meant that you were having memory problems, Anna!!

Perth? But not the Scottish one!

Annadl

The Australian one Tim.

Thank god I'm not a cricket fan.  ...but my in-laws live with us.  MIL was going for England and FIL was going for Australia.   I couldn't wait for it to be over.  There was so much tension between the two of them from one day to the next.

Phew FIL handled the loss very well.

I loved the post about the understanding cricket.  Out, in then out again, hee hee hee ;D

I think I'll sign as Anna from downunder.  Howzat!

Anna from downunder ;D

PS: Will everyone understand that?
