Can anyone tell me how to "dress" an onion for the showbench, & what constitutes "As grown"? I need to know by tomorrow,please!

Haven't done cabbages or runners, but for onions, I cut the top growth to about 1-2 inches and tie the end over with rafia, they also like them to have dried for a few weeks so that the skin isn't shiney, but is clean. I don't think it's so important for the weight category. I only found this out this season. Got introduced to 2 lovely peeps who have been showing for years. There is a rule book available, and you should be able to get it from the peeps who organise your show. Tells you all the rules. I'm still novice, but hope this helps. And good luck. Lottie  ;D

Glenys - I do not show onions, but I do attend horticultural shows regularly showing my flowers and potted plants.  I have looked at the vegetables and the onions are usually shown in a shallow dish, sitting on sand to keep them steady.  They are all of a uniform size and cut quite low to the bulb.  I hope this helps a little.  Let us know how you get on.   Pat

There are various organisations that have rules on showing vegetables. One is the NVS, National Vegetable Society, which I don't know a lot about, the other is the RHS who do a handbook, called:
RHS Show Handbook
the ISBN number is 1874431981 and it costs £7.95.

Most shows will state on their entry schedule that veg are to be judged according to RHS or NVS rules.
You really need to get a copy of the show schedule and the RHS book.
