Following on from No Butterflies, I have no small birds in my garden.  I am really missing them.  I did see a young robin this evening in the bushes and one chaffinch but really all the blackbirds and even the starlings have left for better pastures.   I know they are out in the countryside feeding off all the seed and fruit but roll on winter, if only to get my entertainment back.  Even the pheasants have deserted me and the red legged partridge.  Deep depression folks!!!!

Jane the Novice

You are not alone Carol. During the spring and early summer I had loads of small birds in ym garden. All I seem to have now are a few collared doves and some extremely fat wood pigeons. I dislike the cold weather intensly but like you am looking forward to the return of the smaller birds.

Yes thats me too Jane.  Mind you we are saving some money on seed, fat balls and peanuts etc.  But, its just like turning a tap off, one minute they are all here feeding madly and then  gone......   I live on the edge of countryside with open fields and trees.  Don' t really want the winter yet.

;D ;D ;D ;D

I have been filling my feeders daily, but now the birds seem to have deserted me, apart from the sparrows and an occaisional visit fron a great spotted woodpecker. I expect they are feeding on alder trees, September and october are the two months when the birds dont come so much to the feeding stations as there is a great deal of natural food about, but when the bad weather comes they will be back.

That's strange - I still have loads of small birds visiting my feeders.  Robin, bluetit, greenfinch, sparrows, plus the starlings & collared doves and blackbirds.

Still no butterflies here though :'(  only the cabbage white.
Happy gardening all...........Pat

yes me too I get all those birds plus a dunnock or two. Loads of feral pigeons and wood pigeons. Swifts circling round at twilight. On Saturday we were blessed with half a dozen long tailed tits - don't see them here very often. And of course the Sparrowhawk standing on a bird it had caught and pecking away at the tummy, feathers fluttering down from the apple tree. Oh and don't forget the wretched magpies. Never get no finches though.

Butterflies are the usual white, and we do get the little holly blue from time to time. Hey and I just saw a dragonfly zoom past. Joy  :) :) :)

Plenty of birds in my garden, mind you I do feed them all year round even though I am surrounded by countryside. 7 collared doves love to roost in a conifer tree along with other small birds. The one bird I have not seen seen this year is the goldfinch-very strange!

I even have a sparrow hawk who likes to sit on one of my trees to preen itself. Must be a young one, because if it's not careful my next door neighbours cat, called Dracula, will get it!!!!
