Carott Question?

Just pulled my first carrots ;D ;D medium size Nantes taste delish raw ;D ;D But I noticed one or two are green at the top, is this norm? should I discard? cut the green off and nibble away?

Soz the piccy doesn't show the green very well, it's the second one up from the bottom ::)

can`t see picture Roy but most of mine are like that, think it is exposed bit due to high pressure watering :o

I just cut it off and eat the rest...........as I did tonight

Mine to Roy - also with Nantes earlies.  Like Andy I just cut it off in case like with potatoes its poisonous made sure I soiled up the rest.

Just trim and eat - and re-plant the green top to amuse any children if you like - they grow quite happily  ;D

Don't worry, green carrots are fine, it's only green potatoes that you shouldn't eat

Oh, I'm envious, Roy - our first sowing came to nothing (well half a dozen carrots out of 6 x 10ft rows!) so had to resow. Second lot are showing nicely now but will be a long time before we can enjoy them - swings and roundabouts, eh?

Carrots have been a strange one this year, most years they come up like cress but this year all of my rows bar one have produced a carrot every 9 - 12 inches, very odd. This is apart from one particular row which has come up as normal. Oh well, time to get a few more sown I suppose

We have been eating thinnings for the past few weeks. I annoy my neighbour by growing massive harvest (total years supply), when he keeps saying 'cant grow carrots here' !

I also manage to do the same with onions!

If you want to avoid green tops you can earth up the carrots a touch. I myself do not worry too much. Earthing up can also help prevent carrot root fly but it is not 100% fail safe.

;) Thanks for replies Guys, glad to now know all is well, this was my first attempt with some being started off at home in toilet roll inners and the rest sown direct, I must admit I can't see any difference with either way. ::)

The late sown ones have caught up with the toilet roll jobbies 8)

I also thought that sometimes a green top meant there was damage on the carrot somewhere, but maybe I am wrong.  Mine are all coming up in dribs and drabs germinating whenever it suits!  Of course I planned it that way to provide us with a nice succession  :-[ ;D

Hi E J -  if the foliage has a reddish tinge then you usually find the dreaded carrot fly visited you a few weeks back.

Has anyone tried broadcast sowing carrots as per Monty-poncy-don ?  Don't let small children do it.  The wind took the seed and we got 3 carrots from a whole pack.

I did today Baggy.  Fed up with sowing rows and them coming up gappy, so decided, had a square patch, raked, watered, raked, watered again, scattered some seed, raked, watered and left.  ;D
