Title: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: Jeannine on March 30, 2008, 11:52:49
Hi I need to lose some weight, I know I am not on my own and I wondered if starting this thread might help us.

We can post our joys and downfalls, recipes  etc and support each other

What is hard, what is easy, why we want to lose even

Posting you weight is optional as is posting your goal weight.

We are bound to have some folks with food allergies that want to lose and this might help.

I only have John at home, not very much the ra ra ra man and if I mention it at work it will be just a series of groans of failed attempt stories.

What do you think folks..

I really need to do this.

Much like the US support group TOPS..take weight off sensibly

I will keep bumping the thread up to catch newbies as they join us

XX Jeannine

PS support from non weight losers much appreciated

Think it's a great idea Jeannine 8)

Oh Thanks Lish, I feel supported already.

Debster, your expertise will be wonderful.

I have taken my weight off, in case others feel they have to, I have no problem putting it back on if that is what most folks want.

Sounds good to me, I went from almost 15 stonne last year to 13.2, but it is coming back on now.  I lost t by going on my boys tramploine every day for 20minutes a time and more if I had the energy.  The weight just fell off, and I didden't change my eating habits at all

Quick tip for all trying to lose weight: (especially those that struggle to lose it)

Be accountable for everything you put in and out of your body, and you can't go wrong.

Learn the calorific content of what you are eating, learn how many calories you expend day to day, do the sums, and you can't go wrong.

It is really hard to learn the calorific values of everything you eat at first, but after about 6-8 weeks of doing it, it almost becomes second nature. Plus, you tend to eat the same things month in month out, so it becomes practice, rather than learning.

You don't want to lose weight per e. You want to lose body fat - it's the only kind you want to lose. Losing muscle mass reduces your matabolism, by reducing the amount of calories you need to sustain your daily calorie needs, also described as your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

There are 3500 calories in a 1lb of fat. So to lose 1lb week you need to make a negative  calorific balance of BMR + Exercise - Calorie Intake = -3500, or -500/day. The science is simple, it really is. Reducing by 1000 calories per day or more, is not recommended for long periods of time. Weightwatchers works on the same principle, but substitutes points for calories. You can eat what you want, but you must account for it, and if you have too many points, you don't lose weight, or you gain.

XX Jeannine

Keep a diary so you can account for what you are eating. Best way I've found of doing it, is using an application called 'FitDay'.

You'll change your habits quite quickly by becoming accountable. You have to have nice things though otherwise you go mad. But, keeping track will allow you to balance the books for weight loss so to speak. And just think, once you hit the target weight, you can eat more nice things - but still keep it in balance for weight maintenance.

I gave up smoking and went up to nearly 15 stone I failed on the smoking front and didn't really lose the weight.

I am now down to 13 and half since Christmas, The only thing I've done is worked in the garden more and stopped buying the biscuits and chocolate (if it's not in the house you can't eat it) supposedly your tongue resurfaces every seven days so if you can re-frame for that time you lose the craving (wish it was the same for smoking)

Oh I also heard and have tried brazil and walnuts along with pumpkin seeds a hand full of each a day. I would have though they would have been a weight gainer but it's worked so far

Good luck Jeannine and when you get peckish try a couple of the nuts or drink water or half of a  banana and save the other half for later

Aim for a slow loss of weight as it is more likly to stay off

I gave up smoking 2 years ago, and have put on approx. 3 stone!

Since Christmas, I've been watching what I eat, and in the last 3 weeks I've lost 10lbs by following the BHF diet for life - which you can order from their website.

The thing is, I'm eating more than normal, but lots and lots of fruit and veg - 8 portions a day!!

As the First Official Cheerer-On 8), I'd like to say for anyone who looks in here.....

go with the flow

please, please be happy as you are.....this might not be a Size 12-14, whatever, but if you're fit, healthy and HAPPY doing what you do, then this is your Fighting Weight??

Anyone else love the Alexander McCall Smith's (or whatever) books/radio adaptations/ TV film & recognise Precious' statement that she was of 'traditional' build?.....well, imho, you find the weight/size that suits you NOW and, if you can do everything you want to do, you're OK....finding the clothes, tho, to accentuate your own special positive, might take another thread, however...... :-\

So throw those scales away....and let the judge be of HOW YOU FEEL

reading this while eating cake made with over a stick of butter and have decided once i can cook my own meals when i am away to try and loose weight (so hard to control what you eat when your in a hotel and you have to either eat out or order food in.

So great idea to start this thread Jeannine. Might even get the hubbie to lose some weight.

I have done this before with slimming world and lost 3 stone and gradualy over time its all creaped back on.

We need to think about this NOT as denying ourselves pleasures but changing our lifestyle and what when we eat. Most probably most of us on here are eating quite healthly because of all the home made veg, what were perhapse not managing is portion control and eating at the right time and more cream and butter starts to creap into recipies.

When i lost the weight before i actualy ate more then i do now but i ate differently.

Go with the flow Lish and be what you feel, well considering I was a size 6 most of my life and kept if off after 6 kids, I only went to a 10 up when I got to be 39 and now I am a 24 with a bad back and breathlessness I figure I am not in the right place, I will never be a 10 again but my back is too fragile to carry this lot so I have to get it off, having said that, unless it was for my health I would not worry. I don't believe you have to be thin  to look good in fact some folks looks smashing and don't look like Barbie Dolls.

Starting tomorrow Biscombe, well OK I will step on the scales in the morning and have go with you..

What's for dinner!!

Would you belive have I have a Crown  Roast of Lamb stuffed with rosemary and sage  stuffing.

Well it was already out of the freezer  I had   stitched it and made the stuffing.

Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love you tomorrow, you're only a day away..........

I'm still on a downward curve, but I now waver between 73.5kg and 74.8kg (usually after a big meal on Saturdays when Gordon is here). This time last year I weighed 79kg and have gradually lost weight mainly by eating less and trying to reduce my intake of choclit  :P and bikkies  :P.

But I use my Sundays to eat fruit - and only fruit. Every couple of hours a piece of fruit usually shows 1 kg less on the scales on Mondays. Then I try, sometimes not very successfully, to keep it off till the following Sunday. I reckon I've lost about 11lb this way and am still hoping to lose another 7 this year. I don't do any real dieting though - and we enjoyed a lovely rack of lamb with all the trimmings over Easter, so there are always a few setbacks along the way.

I'm happy though to keep on plugging away and posting here of the results and it IS gradually coming off. I just wish I could get rid of my tummy bulge. Doing 60 sit-ups three times a week doesn't seem to be shifting it much  :(

I am back at weightwatchers (fat fighters for little britain fans) tomorrow. Need to lose weight to be comfortable - currently a little over 11 stone and this because I gave up my gym membership 18 months ago and didn't cut back on the eats. I am cmfortable between 9.5 and 10.

Happy to post my progress on the board - i guess my biggest economy is going to be giving up my 2 glasses of wine a night.
Oh well.

That doesn't work for me, I prefer to do it daily as a matter of routine, writing what i eat works against me to,I find I get more irritated and can't be bothered so I pack it in.

excuses I know, but I know what to eat, what not to eat, when to eat and how much..my problem is I tend to eat on the run, not eat enough etc.

If I bring myself to task and give a bit of thought to what I am doing the following day I can do it, so for me keeping focused is the answer.

Also I love fat, any fat, cream or fat on meat, in fact I don't like lean meat, so if I organise myself and cut the fat out I can lose weight very easily. It just takes longer.. whole chicken in the oven;;bung it in.. skinned whole chicken takes about 10 minutes prep time, to skin, wrap etc.. That is my downfall.

I love the old excersise tapes by Richard Simmons, I am not sure if they are available here. He is very funny and sweet and his excercises are a hoot, usually to old pop tunes, the sort of things that automatically get you feet tapping.

He always has regular folks on the videos fron skinny to HUGE and there is no pressure as in say the Cher ones were eveyone looks like her.

walking really is the best exersise i think. i know some of us are less able to walk distances but i think if we   eat a little less and walk a little more its got to help. i also think that making small changes (i.e little less food little more exersise) its going to work long term.

my personal plan is to follow my own advice above and to cut out (or down drastically) on white carbs and make more soup from my allotment produce.  :D

i will join you on the lose three pounds by april 15th jeannine. that sounds do-able.

8 years ago I gave up smoking and got my first grown up job (sitting in front of a computer all day every day :() and the pounds just crept on.
BUT! I have joined the gym and did my first session this morning (I can't lose weight by just changing my diet, I have to do lots of exercise as well)
I do feel better for it, although after spending yesterday digging I was pretty stiff and couldn't do all the stuff I was supposed to.
I'll join in the lose 3 pounds by 15th too :)

I'm not actively planning on losing weight, although I know I am carrying an extra 2 stone.  However, something I discovered by accident has helped me to lose a stone already (although it is blatantly obvious rofl).  Remove everything from your freezer that is processed.  Pasties/pies/fish fingers/chicken nuggets etc etc.  I did this, bought fresh meat from the market butcher and froze it and bought fresh fruit and veg, I got rid of all jars of sauce etc and made my own.  That is all I eat now and so far I've dropped a stone.  Obviously now I have a lottie I can grow my own fruit and veg.  I didn't actually do this to lose weight, I did it because my kids were sluggish, had no concentration span and grouchy.  It's cut my salt intake too.  Granted it's no good to anyone who's got a sweet tooth however!!

I'm hoping this combined with my training that begins this evening for the Race for Life this year will help me to shift the extra couple of stone without me actually going on a "diet".

Good luck to all with their goals, you can all do it, just keep chatting to each other and think of it as a lifestyle change not a "diet".  ;D ;D ;D ;D

That is good advice Posie but in my case I don't buy any of those things already, I make everything from scratch and buy no convenience foods at all except Worcectershire sauce. I make all my own sauces, everything. Tinned stuff comes down to salmon and an emergency tin or two or corned beef which I don't eat and I buy one type of soup for John which is tomato but rarely use it as I make that too, same with baked beans, so I can't alter that much. I do have some tins of kidney beans but only because I saw them on a ridiculous sale at 2p a tin. I bought some Weight Watchers spaghetti the same day for 4p a tin but we opened one and gave the others away.

John won't eat anything that isn't made from scratch and we both hate convenience foods. The reasons are a..because we don't like it, b.. because it can't be as good for you as fresh food.

Neither one of us  really drink either, John never under any circumstances, I about 2 drinks a year, but I do use alcohol in cooking.

I do agree though that this kind of food can pile weight on and it is good advice

I even make potato crisps although not often because of the fat.

Apparently there are "diet" plates you can get, with allocated space for certain food groups.  Never used one but they sound like they could be helpful.  Anyone else tried one?
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: Barnowl on March 31, 2008, 15:53:20
My problem is primarily caused by the demon alcohol - I drink a lot of wine - and lack of exercise.  My next biggest weakness is cheese, but I'm trying to avoid that other than occasional goat or sheep cheese in a tomato and onion salad.

Apart from the cheese, with respect to eating habits I'm a fairly good boy (hardly ever eat cakes biscuits crisps etc), processed food isn't allowed across our threshold - unless you count cans of coconut milk, and I cut out puddings, except on special occasions, a long time ago.

Re red meat: Doctor has said I should only have red meat twice a week - I've cut down to three, which is a start  :)

However to shed the pounds it's tackling the first two that will make the difference.

Jeannine, you're a great cook so probably have already considered it, but could you substitute olive or better still rape seed oil for some of the fat in your recipes or use emulsified sauces rather than cream based ones?
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: Twirlie on March 31, 2008, 16:06:24
I haven't tried the plate but I've heard about them, just depends on how high you plie each section!!!!!!  As a dancer who is not naturally a twig and who loves food I always found it hard.  A good fitness book I once read is body for life, very popular in the States.  Portion size is described as a Baked potatoe being the same size as your fist, same for lean protein IE chicken breast.  It does encourage you to eat 6 times a day which I found hard. But the portion size thing made sense to me.  I now go to weight watchers, I stopped danceing profesoinally 18months ago and piled the weight on. Size 16!!!! So far since Jan I have lost 19 pounds.  I can't believe it as I'm not working out, just dancing the same as before I started.  I'm not hungry at all, can munch on veggies whenever I want something between meals and the W.W. deserts for when you want a naughty are great!
So I say after all the starvation diets, diet pills that can be dangerous 10hours a week in the gymn plus dancing every night, I think Weight watchers beats them all!!!!!
Richard Simmons is the bomb though isn't he!  He used to do charters on the cruise ships I worked on, he is crazzzzzzzy!!!!!!!  Really sweet guy too!  Good luck everyone! ;D

Hi everyone, Ive got nearly 5 stones to release  :-[
Im not saying 'to lose' because i dont want to find it again once its gone  ;)

I had a serious illness 5 years ago that had me in hospital for 9 months, this was the start of my weight gain. Then I gave up alcohol 4 years ago & smoking 2 1/2 years ago & the pounds just piled on  :o

I do try to exercise every day using a rebounder or exercise step. I walk everwhere too. But even adding in trips to the gym &/or swimming regularly hasnt shifted much in the last 5 months (about 12lbs loss). Since being so ill I have really learnt how to relax (meditation etc) & I seriously think my metabolism has changed hugely from my size 8 days of living on the adrenaline of constant stress caused by a nightmare job & overly packed lifestyle! I wouldnt want that life back in any shape or form & am so very pleased I can live a more relaxed life now but I want to be less heavy so I dont compromise my health in other ways.

I'm going to try cutting out all processed carbs (rice, bread, pasta etc), all unnatural sugar sources like cakes/biscuits/chocolate, & any other tyes of processed foods as of today. I will get my carbs & natural sugars from fresh fruit & veg & maybe a little honey if im having major sweet cravings.

Good luck to everyone...here's hoping we all release loads of pounds this week  ;D

Oh lots more. Biscombe I missed your earlier thread, sorry I think I was typing. I have been bad already. I have just a cup of tea today again and just starting another one..I have to start to eat better.

Yes I should try to cut out butter, but cannot switch to a marg, I will chop it altogether.

I can use Slimline mayo , someone at school uses that and it is OK, but that goes against the no bought sauces policy so???

Crystalmoon, well don for joining us, I have that much to lose too so we can help each other.

So there are about 6 of us going for the 3 pounds by 15th April. Tonight I will do a bit of menu planning, focusing on trying to eat breakfst and lunch.

I find it interesting that we all have different foos issues that cause the weight. In my case it is fat, s two or three others it is carbs, and one is wine.

I will eat eat 4 times a day, I will, I will , I will.

Starting tomorrow....... here I come.

Thank you for all the cheer leaders too, your help and support is very valuable.

Recipes welcome here.

I am starting to feel confident and ready.

No exercise for me sadly so it will be slow I think

I started with slimming world  three weeks ago and so far have done over half a stone.
i have been over wieght all my adult life.
my main problem was sandwiches i loved them far to much, anything and every thing had to go in a sandwich, that and crisps i cant have them in the house.
now though with slimming world its such a easy concept you just have to think a little more on what you are eating and  plan ahead.
i have done slimming world before and managed 4 stone but confidense grew and so did my waist again.
people say go with the wieght be happy with what you are.
i can not
one of my biggest reasons for this is i have a eight year old son who if i carry on the way i was going i wouldnt see him grow up.
i was told that three months ago by the nurse who i had seen about given up smoking(which i have dodone)
another reason is my other half is registered disabled and he needs my help more and more each day.
but most of all i am losing wieght for myself.
i wighed in at 22 stone.5 and a half pounds .for my hieght i have to get down to 11 stone.
meaning i have to lose half of my body.
losing one stone or ten  is hard going .
belive me i know.
but i will say this
good luck every one there will be days where you may struggle but you never fail if you keep on trying.

Jim and I both lost two stone by grilling and trimming off fat off our meat.

Planing meals well ahead so if you get hungry the right type of food is to hand.

If we did not want to fiddle to much we had weight watchers meal plus a plate overloaded with our favourite veg.

Not allowing biscuits cake etc in the house.

Walking a lot more.

Keeping a food diary.

If the urge for something nice is overwhelming.Have it in a small portion.Stops you feeling deprived.

I love the skinny cow range of icelollies Low cal and a real treat. They do a blueberry one  and it is so nice.

Good luck everybody. ;D

Well done Wiltshire lass, keep on posting here, you have some excellent reasons for wanting to lose that weight and especially for you yourself.

I know it is going to be hard, giving up smoking was easy compared to this but I guess we are all different so that is not fair to say.

I am glad I started this thread now.

One thing I have noticed is losing  a few pounds is just as important to some one as it is to another who wants to lose a few stone.

Have you ever felt sabotaged  by folks around you. Why is it that when you are trying to lose weight there is always someone who tries to persuade you to have that piece of chocolate of bag of chips. I wonder why that is. Do they take pleasure in getting someone to give in. More important, why do we fall for it,sometimes I feel if you don't take their offering they will be offended and you find yourself eating something you don't want just to please someone who really isn't very interested in supp0rting anything but their own amusement.

Not so on this thread.

Tip I learned years ago, of you have to buy those doughnuts(one of the few sweet things I like) because the family insist, and the craving gets to you, stick the ruddy things in the freezer and phone a friend for a long chat!!

I have eaten a very sensible dinner, salad with a home made dressing with a tiny bit of Roquefort cheeses in it, with a baked skinned and crumbed chicken breast and a small bread roll, no butter, followed by fruit, 1 passion fruit, a fig and a thin slice of watermelon.

I have seeds starting to pop in the sprouter ready for pita sandwiches later this week.

Ooh, just remembered the second hand bike someone gave me at Christmas, I can't walk very well but I bet I could ride that...I will try tomorrow.

I have lost 7 stone since October !! still loads to lose.
I go to the gym and swim 3 times a week (was sent on a GP referal so ask your doc !! ) i now love exercising which is amazing for me to say, im doing the race for life in June which 3 months ago would have been impossible !
I had womb cancer 2 years ago and a hystorectomy and treatment followed, its taken me all this time to get myself motivated to lose the weight !
I get to the gym at 7am and get home by approx 9.30am at the latest ! thats how i make time to go, no excusses !
Food wise i have changed to a smaller plate and don't touch bread as it piles it on for me and the £5 i would have wasted at a slimming club i spend on fresh fruit ect :)
If i can do it anyone can but you need to get your head in the right frame or its a waste of time, i have many t shirts to prove that !
Good luck and keep lossing  :D

One thing I have noticed is losing  a few pounds is just as important to some one as it is to another who wants to lose a few stone.

How right you are, Jeannine. I only have around five pounds to lose, but it is really difficult.
I eat properly three times a day, lots of fresh fruit and veg, no processed food, exercise is gardening, housework, running around after the children etc! but don't go to a gym (no access to one here).

The problem is that no one else in the house is overweight, and they enjoy home made cake and biscuits from time to time. When its there, the temptation to join in is too great!

I am hoping that by supporting everyone else here in their fight, the successes (and there will be plenty) will rub off on me and I'll gain the incentive I need to lose those extra pounds!

Go for it girls!  (Notice that so far it is all us women who are trying to lose weight - what about the men?  :D)

I think there have been a few male contributions, Lindsay; Ace, Fork, Barnowl for starters. I think I have the same problems as Barnowl: I've always been a wine drinker - we usually have a bottle with dinner .. sometimes more and I love cheese.

I normally eat quite a healthy diet, but I am a bit of a workaholic and tend to do things to excess so by dinnertime I'm really tired so either overeat, overdrink or eat the wrong things. The wrong things always seem to be quicker and easier to prepare than the right things!! Also the loneliness since Peter died has led to me overdoing booze on occasion.

So I'm happy to sign up for three pounds by 15th April. I know what I have to do: plan my day and plan my menus so that I've got everything I need in the house and I'm not too tired to prepare it.

Jeannine if you enjoy fat have you thought about Atkins? Basically you cut out the carbs. It seems to work well for some, e.g. you can't have bread or potatoes but you can have mayo with your tuna or broccoli dripping with butter?

If you are struggling with the last half stone, i was told muscle has memory so do something that uses different groups of muscles (eg horse riding will make you ache in places you never knew you had  ;D) and this will help shift it :)

Hi Grawc, the Atkins in my opinion is a killer  and using it is playing with fire, I know many people have used it and lost weight but I know of several folks who got  very ill on it also there have so many law suits in the US for it causing problems I wouldn't touch it,also it is not Dr approved. As my problem is fat though, I f I cut fat out I can lose the weight without having to worry too much about carbs.

Planning ahead is the secret for me and eating regularly.

226.6 pounds this morning (sorry it is easier for me the US way) need to be 223.6 by the 15th April..

Breakfast was tea, 1/2 weetabix, orange juice,,,and I still feel sick!!

Plod on regardless.

Welcome to the recent players.

I went to fat fighters last night and it was worse than I feared 11st 9lb (163 lbs), way outside my healthy BMI weight - no wonder digging took me a little longer this year. and shockingly back at the same weight when I joined WW in 1997  :o- but no more.   ;D

I rechecked my eating habits and realise I am going to have to get back into portion control and limit wine to a couple of glasses on a saturday night. Already this thread has given me inspiration and hopefully we can all do this together. Committed to the loss of 3 lbs - I will post my progress.

I took all my ww cook books out of storage and also bought a new one - so will try to post those recipies that work really well.   :)

that's the problem I have. my OH is built like a stick and over the years my portions have slowly grown until we're eating the same amount: he stays the same size and I get slowly bigger and bigger :(

Please nobody even think of going on Atkins.I lost a lot on it once, felt illand put it all straight back on
Every one is different but I find I am coping by
Not eating any bread at all( I eat ryvita)1slice is too many 1loaf is not enough
Not drinking soft drinks even diet ones (brain thinks its having sugat, wants more
if you do have something you know you shouldn,t make yourself do something to work the cals off, it,ll put you off eating it again!
Eat s-l-o-w-l-e-y they reckon it takes at least 10 minuts for your brain to know your stomach is full oh no eating on the hoof do a proper meal on a plate with lots of veg
Hope this helps someone it,s what I am doing this time and it works for me

I can echo that marg, I eat on the run all the time, if i eat at all trough the day, then again on the evening. It is bad.

Sitting at the dining table with serving dishes is far better, you tend to only take a little, if you serve in the kitchen one tend to empty the pan and then try to eat it.

It is more washing up.

and again....no Atkins diet, it is danegerous for many people.

Managed home made soup at lunchtime, just a little but feel stuffed!!

I have just seen this thread and I too would like to join in.  I have been overweight since having my children 30+ years ago.  Prior to that I was 8stone 3lbs for years.  Since then I have tried all sorts of diets but the weight just goes back on.

I was getting to grips with my weight last year and found I lost a stone just by bringing forward my last meal by a few hours.  Unfortunately, I then had to go in for a total knee replacement operation and the weight has crept on again since then.   :(

These past two months have seen an upward spiral and it coincides with the purchase of my breadmaker and a change of medication which has seen my pulse rate fall to 45.  I always thought it was low at 60!  I have now tipped the 15 stone mark.    :o

I don't eat processed foods and cut the fat off meat.  I try to avoid cheese and chocolate as those are my main weaknesses.  I don't have biscuits, cakes or crisps and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.  Like others on here though I am partial to a glass of wine.

I am going to Cornwall next week so don't know whether I will be able to lose any weight as I will probably drink wine every night with the excuse that I am on holiday.  Hopefully I will get plenty of excercise as I will be with my young grandchildren.

I think this thread will be a good way of giving support to each other as we fight the battle of the bulge.   ;D ;D

Our local "chippy" will happily poach any fish if you dont want the batter...they get quite alot of takers too.....their poached salmon is to die for!

Kathi.....1.5lbs is fine...they say the best way to lose weight is to do it slowly.

I once joined a well known slimming club and lost 7lbs the first week,7lbs the second week and in 13 weeks I lost 2 stone 19lbs.....but then I got too cocky, thought I could stray now and again and guess what....everything went to pot and I put the weight..plus more...back on again very quickly.

Good luck to you all with your weight loss goals.....I know I need all the luck I can get.

Kathi

If that 1.5lbs is only fat (no lean weight - muscle/water), then that means you've restricted your calories by 5250 cals for the week, or 750/day. That's quite an achievement, and you should be proud.

2lb/week loss is the absolute maximum loss rate, as in most cases your body will turn on you. It will digest some lean muscle before fat, as reducing muscle reduces your calorie needs - ie hibernation/starvation whatever you want to call it.

Try not to look at weight loss on a per week basis. It should be a trend over time. So plot it out if you can in a spreadsheet. Google Docs do a free web spreadsheet application which is neat. You should be looking how the trend is, not how it went last week. Certainly a good week will effect the trend. Ideally you want to know how much weight you are losing per week over a period of 4 weeks or more. You'll weight different weights at certain times of days, or after different eating habits.

Good advice Kathy, it's so so true, you really have to be careful how much you lose.

Looking at the figures you said (although I think 19 was supposed to just be 9?), to lose that amount of weight you'd have been restricting your calories by about 1500/day. Over a long period of time, it'll work against you.

It wouldn't have suprised me that over 1/3 of the weight you lost may have been muscle mass. So that means, when you do go back to normal eating, your body requires less, due to less muscle mass, and you put it back on quicker than you ever could.

The most important thing, is to keep the muscle mass, it burns your daily calories without trying. The less you have, the less you need. Dieting too hard eats at the muscle mass, so don't do it. That's why I find it very important to keep a diary and account for everything.

It feels about right to lose about 1.5lbs a week, up to 2lbs feels OK, I have so much to lose that it's probably OK.

I'm seeing my GP's Practice nurse ever 4 weeks for advice and a check up, and all seems well, she's quite happy to see me losing 2lbs a week, and I'll try to stick to that - and I thank you all for your advice and concerns

Thanks

Hi, I make  a Ploughmans.

Bread no butter, (you can use a small amount of fat free mayo which I guess I will have to start buying again) lettuce, sliced tomatoes, thin slivers of red onion, small bit of chutney,I use home made but any would do, then cheese, but I use a VERY strong cheddar and make it absolutley paper thin so there is very little actual cheese.

Fat Free Philly cheese with a tiny amount of strong smoked salmon added.

There's loads of choice, it just depends on how prepared (and disciplined) you are. I either work from home or on the road these days, so it's either really difficult, or really easy to eat well. At an office can be difficult (if that is where you are) as it depends what is near by, or as I said, preparation.

Best things for at work to keep interesting and nice are jacket spuds, as long as you have a microwave. Don't, I repeast 'don't!' cook your spud in the microwave. Do a batch of them on Sunday or Monday in the oven, so you can reheat at work (or at home) through the week. Toppings are then your choice, but as long as you don't go made with fatty stuff you'll be fine - oh, and hold the butter, no really. Jacket spuds done in the oven are devine, they'll fill you up, and you can keep it interesting. Beans, cottage cheese, creme fraiche, tuna mayo (light). My favourite is 1/2 tin beans (cheap ones) with a squirt of tomato puree and 1/2 teaspoon of chilli powder. Small dollop of creme fraiche, and a good sprinkling of chopped parsley or sweet basil.

When I'm on the road, I tend to try to get to M&S if I can, as they do a good range of healthy choice butties, and I really like the Sushi to Snack (no raw fish). Plus they do nice packets of fruit, carrot dippers etc - all nice, low calorie and healthy.

Fail in that, the slag of all snacks is calorie conscious, pot noodles - skip the bread to dunk though.

timiano, are you a slimming club leader or nutrionist? You seem to know a great deal about dieting and weight loss. We will be all be asking you for advice.  :)

Not at all. I've been perpetually a yo-yo overweighter all my life, and the only way I've managed to lose weight is by really understanding the science, or at least mechanics behind it. Even though I've learned how it all works, I still find it difficult, as my job entails quite a lot of travel, meaning eating out in restaurants 3+ times/week at night, and lunches from all over the place - while trying to maintain sanity!!

Diet this, diet that, all you need to know is what goes in minus what goes out has to be the same or you'll either lose or gain weight. How do you balance the books? Well, you need to find out what you burn (roughly), and then start counting what you eat. Simple!

Keeping to it is the hard part, and I wish I had a mechanical formula that worked for will power - alas I don't. All I can say, is through experience, is don't stop having nice things like treats, just account for them in the plan. My other tip is preparation. Food tastes sooooo much nicer when well prepared. A simple dish can be turned into a culinary delight with a litte bit of this or that - and it makes you feel like you are treating yourself all the time.

Oh....and eat less meat - we eat too much of it!

like jeannine i love the fat from the meat and i eat little bread, i dont eat much processed food at all, most of my food is made from scratch.
i enjoy a glass or two of wine but i then have to suffer hot flushes if i succumb. my problem is portion control, i am not bothered about breakfast ,i try to eat a reasonable lunch and evening meal then temptation strikes!!!  once i relax for the evening in front of the tele i start looking for nibbles
my husband is also disabled so we are not very active and he loves his food more than me and its hard to say no when somebody says ive done you a snack so my willpower wilts
i will start tomorrow as too late today

Snack ideas :)
Homemade popcorn is good just leave the butter ect off, i like a few nice grapes as they satisfy the sweet need.
I always have a yoghert for my pudding that seams to 'end' the meal for me.
We have a low fat diet in general, bread is my biggest problem :( one slice and no weight comes off !!
Meal wise we have curries, chilli, roast dinners, pork chops with paxo on top cooked int he oven in foil, spag bol but all with no fat even dry roast the potatoes and parsnips ect.
The biggest change has been a smaller plate size.
Always had skimmed milk so that is easy, its just getting into new habits.
I have a free bar of galaxy choccie thats been here since last October and it doesnt bother me.
 Come on everyone :)

Have to be honest, I never eat breakfast, just several cups of coffee. If I eat lunch it's generally sandwiches of some kind.  My biggest problem is I can go days without eating a thing, then 2 or 3 days when I don't stop.  Need to find some kind of happy medium.  I too would eat the fat and throw the meat and I LOVE chicken skin.

Mind you I'm hoping now that I'm going to gym twice a week and running 3 times a week it will start to reverse itself.

Fingers crossed and good luck everyone!

Hi everyone, Ive just caught up with the posts. Im not exactly on the Atkins diet but I am cutting out most carbs (not fruit & veg though). Some of you mention problems with Atkins type diets, could you elaborate please?
Sofar Im sticking to 2 main meals a day with a snack type meal (sometimes i have the snack meal for lunch other days for breakfast).
Today I had fruit for breakfast with a flax seed bar, for lunch a mushroom omelette & for dinner lean roast beef & dry roasted sweet potatoes. Ive been eating like this for a couple of weeks now & have lost 2 inches from my waist  ;D (I think bread & other wheat products were making me bloated so cutting these types of carbs has really helped).
I was 14st 3lb this morning so hoping to see that scale go down in a weeks time  ;)
Good luck everyone....WE CAN DO IT

Hi everyone, Ive just caught up with the posts. Im not exactly on the Atkins diet but I am cutting out most carbs (not fruit & veg though). Some of you mention problems with Atkins type diets, could you elaborate please?

Atkins isn't 'that' bad. The folk who have trouble with it, are the ones that don't really eat veg. You really need to eat veg until it comes out of your ears, massive portions. Spuds are starchy though, as are some other veg.

Be careful though, as it's not as effective as actually knowing what you are eating. You can't stay on a low carb diet forever, and you will return to normality. If you learn about food now, it will help you more when you stop trying to lose, and start trying to maintain.

Thanks Timiano for your reply. I love most veg but I dont eat potatoes as my digestive system doesnt get on well with nightshade plants. I suppose the most starchy veg I eat is baked sweet potatoes & i do like the sweet root veg like parsnips probably abit too much.
I will see how i feel on this low carb approach for a couple of months & maybe i will decide to just leave white stuff like pasta rice & bread out of my diet forever  ;)

Low cal snacks/lunch idea.

Last night we had mackeral fillet (grilled) with roasted med veg (peppers, banana shallot, aubergine, courgette, tomatoes) which had ben roasted ina tray and sprayed with 1 cal. I then season and add basil and balsamic vinegar/very small amount of good olive oil and serve warm. But always do enough so I can take it to work cold the next day.

For me this is enough for my lunch, and in terms of WW points I only need to account for the oil in the dressing. For my OH who is over 6ft he will also take some crusty wholemeal bread as well.

Also have done roasted squash cubes - again roasted in  1 cal, seasoned with salt and black pepper, some pine nuts and caper chopped in. With green leaves as a base this again good as a boxed salad.  ;D

Can I join in, I'm the heaviest I have ever been at 18.5 stone.
I joined slimming world again last week so hopefully I will have had a good loss this week.
My weight has gone up and down for years mainly because of my knee problems.  I had broken it three times in 6 years had wires put in and taken out, everytime I lost the weight I would break my knee and put it all back on again.
Touch wood this is the best it has been in a long long time so I hope when I lose the weight it will stay off this time.
Is anyone else following the slimming world plan?

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION
After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here's the final
word on nutrition and health:
1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than us.

4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart
attacks than us.
5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer
fewer heart attacks than us.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. ;D

Hi all,

Mind if I join in too?  I won't be able to start until after 11th April (serious exam next week - and there is no point in making a commitment that I know I won't be able to keep).

Thanks for starting the thread Jeannine (and good luck with the weight loss) - it's certainly encouraged me to make the decision fix a date to start to lose weight.

 Tuna in brine (drained)
Diced peppers, tomatoes, onion, cucumber, mixed with a small amount of low fat mayo and put in a tub  :)
 Or...
Pitta pocket filled with salad and chicken or lean ham.

If the bad stuff is at work, then you have my sympathy - it really is very hard. If it's at home, what's it doing in the house to start with? No excuses.

But, if you are going to have it. Realise what you've had, account for it, and eat less for dinner/lunch etc.

Late checking in today so thank you to everyone,

a couple of points..

Atkins diet, the tons of veggies and lack of carbs are ok, but they advocate you can eat as much fat as you like.. any amount.. that is where the problem lies, so if you want to put 4 ounces of butter on your  asparagus, and have bacon, egg, fried mushroom etc every day, with fried chicken(no coating) it is OK,

Sound wonderful but a body can't take that for very long.

Someone said baked potatoes, warmed up, that would be so yucky for me, I couldn't eat a warmed up baked spud if my life depended on it. I don't like toppings on baked spuds at all actually, I can eat a plain one, hot and fluffy out of the oven if the spuds are good but I rarely eat themnow as the potato varieties here are just not fluffy enough for me.

Apart from reheated frozen soups I hate left overs, I have to cook fresh every day.

I don't eat out for the same reason as many things are re heated frozen stuff so restaurants are not a problem for me.

I have done my best today but have only had a little home made soup and a slice of dry bread today. the level of pain I am in is not helping, but I guess as I am very inactive just now it is perhaps a good thing I ma not eating much.

I have been getting so much inspiration from this thread though, everyone seems to be giving such good advice, and I think it is great that so many folks are feeling supported by the thread.

Well done to those of you who have got off to a good start, it just shows you what a great bunch of folks there are here cos everyone is cheering  all of us on.

Keep it up gals, and thank you to the cheer leaders too!!

Yeay!  Just been to Weight Watchers and lost 1.5 pounds!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

So I went to the chippy!!!!!!!!!

What I hear you all cry!!!!  It was a special treat as I got to a goal!!  I set myself goals and target losses and then I get to eat what I want for one meal!!!  My Weight loss since January is now 20 pounds!!!!  So I had chicken and chips!  Strange though how having not had that much grease in a while your taste buds change.  Didn't enjoy it as much as I thought so the cats helped me with the chicken.   So what is going to be my treat for my next target?  Not the chippy!

The thing with Atkins is that lots of folk just do the protein and the fat and it's not surprising they get ill/ don't lose weight. Plus eating anything excessively isn't a good idea.

For me Atkins involves loads of vegetables, a bit of meat/eggs/fish and butter cream etc to add flavour, but again not in excess.

I miss bread, potatoes, pasta  and rice all of which I love. Also fruit which is very limited on Atkins in the early stages. I don't really miss the sweet stuff since I don't have a sweet tooth. I really miss the wine but the occasional dram is allowed.

I haven't done Atkins for years but when I did my energy levels were hugely enhanced and the weight just dropped off.

as I,v said before I wiegh on a friday cuz I have been doing this on another forum (over 50,s only) since tne begining of january. I had remained the same for the last fortnight so was very pleased that I have lost a further 3lb  ;D
this makes 24lb in 3 months(app2lb a week) which I feel is a healthy amount
in my opinion eating sugar is worst than eating fat :o sugar is very addictive and leaves you wanting more where as small amounts of fat turn into energy
I feel all this low fat stuff is a bit of a con as they add  more sugar to make it taste nice and it makes people come back for more thinking it,s healthy
hope thesre thoughts help someone and yes I am feeling a bit smug at the moment ( losing wieght has this effect on me I,m afraid)

Keep going at it - get your excersise routines habit before the main part of summer comes. When it gets really hot you will already be fitter and can carry on rather than only just starting in exhausting heat.

I teach martial arts and a few people are just there for fitness so I understand how important it can be.

make a plan that works your whole body - not just waist inches! Losing weight can be fine but should be done healthily.

Keep eating what you grow of course - doesn't get much better.

Get some Mr Motivator spandex and shout 'and hur and hur' - ok maybe thats just me then.

I have been reading this but can't remember if anyone has mentioned this.  Measure yourself.  Thighs, calves, hip, waist, bust, upper arms, even neck.  Write is down then once a month, do it again.  Sometimes you won't see pounds off on the scales, then measure yourself, you may well see inches off your waistline.  I go to weight watchers and have lost nearly 2 stone and one of our teachers mantras is if you don't loose on the scales, go home and have a measure.  Good luck everyone.

my 2 cents on this and I hope it helps and doesn't hinder:-

metabolism is a very individual matter and is in a sometimes fragile state, perhaps more so with women than men because of a higher hormone secretion activity - the thyroid gland is often at the centre of this and many women go undiagnosed as borderline or having a hypo active thyroid, i.e. under active = weight gain amongst other issues but because it can be an ever changing delicate balancing act one day can be so different to the next

again, because metabolism is an individual matter then one diet that works for one person might not work for another and even not eating much at all, as in a crash diet, just confuses the metabolism that has become dependent on certain foods - it is almost like a craving - what we crave we eat a lot of, the more we crave it the more we eat it the more we crave it - and it is this that finally tips the scales for one's own metabolism, it is almost like an allergy and yet we over consume certain foods without actually realising it

very often it comes down to naming your top 2 foods, those that you couldn't do without such as wheat, sugar, sweets and chocolate, wine and other alcohol, potatoes (in all their forms), processed food, ready made food etc etc - remove or drastically cut down on one or both of these top 2 foods and you'll almost guarantee to lose weight because you've kidded your metabolism back into working properly

why don't some of you list those top 2 foods and work round that - very difficult to do but it is probably what will work for each individual

good luck  :)

When I joined slimming world I found out that my problem was I never ate enough food for my height.

Once I started eating what they recommended and believe me I struggled to eat such large amounts of food it started to fall off.

With not eating as my job was more important at the time, my metabolism got all out of sync ... I use to skip breakfast and lunch and eat a small meal at night, and as I was so tired after a long day I couldnt really be bothered to eat that much.

Not eating enough can cause weight gain too.  I found out the hard way :)

I think the world DIET should be abolished as if we all ate healthy food and ate proper meals.. the weight should come off.  As my grandmother who is 90 pointed out to me, that in her day they ate allotment veg and little meat, as that was all that was available, but weight gain was not a problem back then. :)

Just found this thread! Hope it's not too late to join in. Started the Tesco's GI diet at the beginning of the year, started off at 12st 4lb and lost 1st 4lb in about 10 weeks but then haven't lost a thing for the last month, so need a good kick up the backside. I love the GI premise as I need to know the science behind things, and as GI was developed for diabetics it has a lot of sensible theory to back it up (though sadly also a lot of twerps jumping on the bandwagon and getting it wrong).

My weakness is dark chocolate and wine in the evenings and weekends, but much worse is sheer tiredness - after lunch in particular I crave sugar and will shovel down anything in the office. Also very bad if eating out, which I do a couple of times a week.

Joined a gym and have entered Race for Life, so am getting fitter - noticeably so in the last couple of months. Find it very hard to drop chocolate and booze, though. Sort of hoping that if I get fit enough I won't need to...

Hi All

Just to add my fourpennyworth!!  I was 2 stone overweight.

I have recently returned to my teenage weight!  I am a comfy size 10 and happy to be comfortable again in clothes and fitness.  Last year I cut out a lot of fat from my diet - and although I walked every day - I sauntered rather than proper walking.  I now have two young large dogs and walk fairly fast twice a day possibly and hour and a half every day.  The other thing I found that helped a lot was eating a very small evening meal and no later than 7ish!

I am nearly vegetarian now and only occasionaly have red meat possible twice a month.

Good luck all of you.

Had keep fit last night and am aching today.  Had a delish tea of thai crab cakes, baked not fried, with mixed leaf salad and a rhubarb tart made with filo pastry for dessert, only 4 points for the entire meal and as I can have 22 a day, that was a low point dinner!  For the next 2 weeks though I am on the summer kick start where I limit myself to 18 points a day, which is quite a struggle as I have 3 a day on milk before I eat a thing.

Emma your meal sounded wonderful.

Today I had a lettuce and tomato sarnie, no butter or mayo and I have had a miso soup and 2 ryvita this evening..this is good at least I have had 2 meals today.

I know I am going to nibble the liccy though.

I missed my first weigh in after a weeks diet cos I was stuck in London for a couple of days on a conference - endless buffets which I valiantly ignored. Sme of the little canapes and stuff looked really nice though :'(

What I hadn't realised was that deciding against a starter and a dessert and just ordering a light main meal and a small class of wine when you are dining alone was such a problem for restaurants. The serving staff asked me a minimum of 6 times was I sure I didn't want anything else. I decided I either look like I am wasting away (not) or that I can eat all the pies (likely).  ;D

My scales say I have lost weight, but need confirmation. For some reason my scales always say I have lost more than the WW ones.

In the meantime - here is my WW meal for tonight

Chicken Tagiatelle with Lemon Saffron Sauce
150 g pasta, dried, tagliatelle & pinch saffron strands
1 portion stock cube, chicken, make up to 50ml with hot water
100 g low-fat soft cheese
3 teaspoon lemon(s), zest, finely grated (use 1 small lemon)
200 g roast chicken, skinless and boneless, torn into pieces
50 g petits pois, or garden peas, thawed if frozen
1 pinch salt, and freshly ground black pepper
4 large leaf basil, to garnish
Instructions
Put saffron strands into a bowl and add 3 tablespoons boiling water. Leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Cook tagliatelle in a large saucepan of lightly salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes, or according to pack instructions.

Meanwhile, heat chicken stock and low fat soft cheese in a small saucepan, whisking until smooth. Stir in lemon zest, then the saffron and its liquid.

Drain tagliatelle and return it to the saucepan. Add sauce, chicken and peas. Stir gently to heat through for 1-2 minutes, then serve, garnished with basil leaves.

Went for a "run" last night, more like a stagger fast, stagger slow, stagger fast, stagger slow.

Sounds just like my training runs lol

I'm doing terrible, 'forgot' I was trying to lose weight when I saw Warburton's crumpets on a BOGOF deal.  Hey ho, back on it tomorrow now that I've eaten them all!  :D

Well I'd like to be in too.

I once weighed 12st after giving up smoking.

I went through a crisis in life, started smoking again and basically ate nothing much and drank like a fish. I lost 3.5 st, in 6 months.
Being 5'6 and 8.5 st I was looking a lil bit sick! I could easily see how people fell into the anorexia trap, cos once I'd gone so long with out, I wasn't bothered by it and wasn't hungry anymore.

Got my life back on track and was eating properly again , managed to give up smoking. I kept my weight off for many years. staying between 9 and 9.5st

Over the last few years it has started to creep up and now at 10st

I want to join you all cos there's no way I want to got back to being 12st.

I just ordered some new jeans and they are too tight  >:(
Gonna try and eat better and walk more. Says me who can't go out today, waiting for the cooker repairer to come.

I work shifts and last night replaced my sandwich for bran flakes (I quite like them so no punishment) My lunch break is 9.45pm so quite late.
For my earlier tea break I was having a muller rice and a banana. Now I'm going to have EITHER/OR not both.

My biggest problem now is drink, I like to have lots of wine and then get the munchies after. Also find the next day after a session I could eat a horse! So am going to not drink for a while or if I do it will be maybe just 3 or 4 few cans of lager on a saturday night only.

For dinner today I am having sausage and baked bean casserole.

pan fry sausages and take out the fat, set asside . Fry an onion in a tiny bit of oil. add garlic. meanwhile chop saus into lumps, put back in, then add a tin of tomatoes, tin of beans and an oxo. Serve with pasta or jacket spud.
Sometimes I make this but a hot spicy version.
Co op sauusages 6 in a pack, so 3 each is 450 cal..... hoping this is quite a good recipie

One last thing, I read sometime ago, think it was Pamela Anderson said: that when she felt like eating something she would clean her teeth. Then cos your mouth feels and nice and fresh and minty you don't want to eat anything.

I read that one too.  Another thing to do is to drink a glass of diet lemonade before you eat, the bubbles fill you up and stop you overeating.

sometimes you think you are hungary when you are really thirsty, and need plain water this also works when you seem to run out of energy
I have decided that fizzy diet drinks are not good so have cut them out
wish I could ditch the strong, black (nonsweetened) coffee

Hi everyone Ive been doing ok on the high protein/low carb approach but Im really starting to crave fruit & veg & as they are definitely healthy options as far as Im concerned Im not going to stick with low carb any longer. It just seems abit mad to me to be avoiding really healthy food & it isnt the way I want to eat for the rest of my life. Im glad I had the few weeks of low carb so I could ditch my over indulgence of bad carbs like biscuits & chocolates  ;)
I really want to find an approach to eating that I can use for the rest of my life that also helps me reach the right body weight for me to be healthy, rather than a diet that I then 'come off' & susequently regain weight  ::)
Ive just read a really interesting little book by Susie Orbach called 'On Eating' & Im hoping it may be just what Im looking for. Basically you can eat whatever you like so you dont set up feelings of deprivation but you must only eat when truly hungry & stop as soon as you are full. There's alot of other useful stuff in the book too but that is the general idea.
Im starting with this approach from tomorrow. Wish me luck  ;D

Hi be careful with only eatinh when you are hungry, that is my downfall,I never seem to get hungry, I can exist on tea, so I don't eay regular meals, consequently my metabolism is slow and my body hangs on to every scrap it can.

The only way I can lose weight is to plan and eat 4 times a day  but I always am on the run,  I find it impossible to eat breakfast and  now  for about 2 years I have stopped eating lunch too. If I do, I feel sick and really awful, be careful you don't fall in to this trap.

My goal is to gradually re train myself to eat regularly.

It seems daft for someone who eats little to be overweight but it is true in my case.

Thanks Jeannine for sharing this...I hadnt considered my metabolism slowing down but what you say makes sense as I gained most of my excess weight when I was in hospital & eating very little. I had always blamed my gain on not exercising but it was probably alot more to do with not eating!
I will aim to eat regularly instead & see how I go, but like you i will find it hard to want to eat full sized breakfasts & lunches.

I have just got back from a holiday in Cornwall and am now catching up with this thread.

I was sorry to read that you have been in a lot of pain Jeannine and hope that you have now sent it packing or should I say "seen the back of it".   ::)

If it is any consolation about your weight gain, I have put on even more weight.   :( When I weighed myself this morning I had put on 3lbs over the week.  I must admit to drinking wine every evening and having a bottle of Irish Cream liqueur.  I had chocolate, nuts, raisins and snacks as well as two huge meals out.  I did chose the new potato option though instead of chips so that is probably why I haven't put on ten pounds!

Holiday over, it's back to sensible eating now.  When is the first official "weigh in"?  The 15th seems to stick in my mind.

Well done to all of you who have lost weight.

I hope you are better now Jeannine.

I can recommend the GI diet for balanced, gradual weight loss, and they do make you eat three times a day! You have to get the books by Dr Jennie Brand Miller though, she's one of the ones that developed it for diabetics so it's based on good science and isn't faddy. Lots of veg! Also a gradual approach to exercise and diet so you don't have to do everything at once.

I've done pretty rubbish this weekend, went away for a birthday bash and drank far too much (though didn't eat much). Weigh-in on Tuesday morning, suspect bad news... On the bright side, I bought a pair of size twelve jeans and they're slightly too big!

Glad you're getting a bit more mobility Jeannine, hope the pain is better.

My key learning: to stop feeling jumpy in late morning my breakfast has to be mainly protein, NO sugar. An egg, no cereals. Some no fat milk. Coffee.  That has taken away the low blood sugar jittery feeling.  Some cheese for a mid-morning snack. No cookies.

But, that said, my downfall is tea time with hubby and sitting in the evening with a snack---very bad.  If I could keep away from that snack I'd be the proper weight. I've added 10 lbs since I retired which hasn't helped the knees.  ::)

I have just found this thread so thought I would join in too.   I really, really, really need to lose weight as I currently weigh 17 stones, which isn't that healthy for somebody who's only 5' 5" & female.

I found out last September that I have very mild diabetes & should keep a watch on what I eat but I find it very difficult.   Diabetes runs in the family and everybody who's started out like me has ended up on daily insulin injections.

I also recently found my sister's wedding photos and can't believe how fat and frumpy I look, a mistake I don't wish to repeat at my brother's wedding.

Let's see how things go this year

Hiya

Encouragement to all of you.  The sun is shining.  Breakfast is very important. You need to eat to get your metabolism going in the morning.

I make my own muesli which has loads of porridge oats, wheat free granola, brazil nuts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries,  the odd raisins, pumpkin seeds.  this mixed with a little semi skimmed milk and I always put either red grapes down the bottom about 20 of them or add strawberries, raspberries. You can get a terrific selection down at the Health Food shops and it doesn't cost a fortune.  No sugar is needed.

This is amazing for keeping you going till lunchtime and beyond.  I use a mug as a measure and to scoop the muesli from a huge glass jar.

The other thing to have handy at all times is water.  Plain tap water (filtered if yours doesnt taste too good)  Drink at least 2 litres per day.  It flushes out system and keeps hunger pangs at bay.

Finally, instead of having colonic irrigation!  Try eating 3/4 whole beetroot with salad or even on their own again flushing with plain tap water do this for a couple of days with one meal.  Certainly cleans the tubes makes you feel good and does you loads of good!

Keep going.  We need everyone to be feeling positive about this and good about
how well they are doing.

Good luck

can I join in too....?

I've always had a weight problem, well all my adult life..............like may others, I gave up smoking 4 years ago,it was shortly before our 25 wedding anniversary, we had 'the holiday of a lifetime' planned, 3 weeks touring around New England, finished with a 2 night stay in Niagara, 3 nights in New York before flying home.

But by the time I got to new york, new trousers I had bought , didn't fit, and I've never worn them. :(

I also had a falling out with my best friend, we didn't speak for 2 years, I suppose I was 'grieving the loss of our friendship, and turned even more to food.

I don't go out much now, only with the dogs on the field, I 'm so ashamed of my size, or anyone seeing me, who new me before i put this weight on ..daft isn't it !!!
the I watched a program called Fat Doctor...anyone seen it ?
I thought I had a problem, I burst into tears.........I felt so sorry for woman, so............................

Last Friday I joined Slimming world.................. :)

I'll let you know how I get on this Friday
keep up the good work  :-*

Result  8)! After 15 days of eating smaller portions and keeping to my one day a week fruit day I am down over 3 lb and feeling decidedly chuffed.

I now find that if I load my plate I can't eat it all without feeling bloated, so my aim till I reach my goal of 70kg (already 2kg lower than my initial goal.) - keep the portions small and keep off the choclit  ;).

I am reading this thread with interest and am very much inspired by you all.
All the personal struggles to fight all kinds of cravings I can identify with: licorice, chocolate and fatty foods like mayo and butter are my biggest temptations and I try to keep away from them.

What I do notice, however, is the sole focus on food. In the Netherlands there is a public campaign advising people to take up an active life style next to watching your food intake.
And that doesn't mean that everybody needs to go jogging more often: just walking in the park or to the shops is enough. And actually more effective than the more streneous activities.

The national activity norm is 30 minutes of activity every day and that includes brisk walking, carrying shopping baskets, cleaning house, gardening  ;D, walking the stairs instead of using the elevator.
Without physical activity the dieting will be less effective, whereas without dieting the activity alone is effective in losing some weight.

I agree, have started walking from the station to work and back (2.5 km each way) and going out most lunchtimes, and have joined up to the Race for Life to force me to take regular exercise. However, I know that level of activity isn't possible for everyone, especially if they've had back or knee injuries, so it's good we're focusing on food and drink as we can always have another exercise thread. (And find ourselves very surprised to be contributing to it!  :))

getting on everyday, even though the temptation is great, can have a detrimental effect if you haven't lost anymore, or even had a gain  ??? and that's probably only fluid !!!

Not daft at all Jeannine, if you eat less than your body requires, it goes into survival mode and begins to store fat from anything it can instead of burning it off as it would usually.  I also have the same problem, I could live off coffee and the occasional piece of toast.  Hope you feel better soon. x
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!

Quite right, it's much harder to lose weight if you don't eat much or exercise much in the first place, which is a right sod if you're not well or have an injury. The only thing to do I think is to discipline yourself to eat more of the right sort of thing and try to move around as much as you can bear. Even if you put on weight at the beginning, you're building up muscle and metabolism and getting healthier, which will help lose weight when you're ready.

I DID IT..I DID IT I BLOOMING WELL DID IT.

I made my goal of losing the 3 pounds by the 15th and I did it and 5 ounces more.  Oh I can conquer the world now.

Considering the fact that I am unable to exercise I am very proud of myself.

I have forced myself to eat a tiny  breakfast ( tea, very tiny glass of orange juice and about 1/3rd of a bran muffin  but I   still managed to eat a small lunch which is very hard for me as I really can't face food till about 2pm. The breakfast is really really hard but I have made it on about half the days, I have done better with the lunch though  as I have only skipped a few, generally just a couple of crackers with a cheese triangle but it is a start.

Can't do the water though,  I am drinking PLJ made with sweetener but have to be careful cos if I drink too much I am full then I don't eat the food!!

That 7 am cup of tea usually  lasts me till I get home at night so drinking the lemon juice is a big step for me  and with food too.

So I have eaten a bit more and lost a bit of weight, what a funny world we live in.

Welcome to all the new posters, I find you all so supportive and it really helps me .

Wilko, a special hug for you, sweetie please please don't let your weight shame you, what is inside is what counts to the folks that matter in this world and you need a BIG heart for that. Well done for joining slimming world, good luck and God Bless, give yourself a huge pat on the back for the losses and a mini shoulder shrug for the days when you feel you should have lost more or days when you had the extra nibble.

I have to make a decision soon to use the pain patches I have now been prescribed but I am having a hard job with that one, daft really cos  I  am fairly sensible usually!!

Still on the bright side I am better off than two weeks ago both weight and pain wise so  I shall plod on.

Well done to all of you..I am so glad I started this post now, it has  done wonders for me.

Keep slogging on gals(  guys too of course)

Thank you

Its really good that everyone is doing so well........real motivation.  ;D

Glad that you are feeling a little better Jeannine - pain in itself can be a problem. I know my brother in law uses food as a comfort as he is in constant pain. There is also evidence to show that if you are stressed - and pain is a stress factor - it cause you to produce cortisol which makes it difficult to lose weight. So just trying to be more relaxed is a way to start shifting a few pounds - easier said than done I know.

Hi all - sounds like you are all really doing really well.

Some have lost 3 lbs - now imagine those as 6 packs of butter that is a lot of weight and blubber isn't it.  I think it helps to picture actually what you have lost!

Another tip is to chew chew chew every mouthful chew at least 32 times.  The more you chew the quicker the body breaks down the food you have eaten it is all to do with enzymes or that sort of thingy in your saliva!  Plus your brain tells you you are full before you would normally feel full.

Muscle is heavier than fat so well done norfolklass!  Yes it sounds very much like you are on the right track!

Another factor how about not buying some of the dreaded biscuits, chocolates, sweets, crisps for the whole family.  If you haven't got them in the house you are less likely to hit a weak moment and eat them.  Your family will probably moan but I am sure they will live quite happily without them and perhaps you can get them to eat fruit instead and help them to have a healthy future?

Plus -  I re-iterate water, water, water.

Even if you can't exercise in the conventional way there is still room for movement of sorts - lifting cans of beans (weights) etc.

Keep going - I think I will set myself up as chief cheerleader!!

Only joking!

Old Bird

Just read the following which gives me some renewed interest in slashing my weight:

"At what point does being overweight start to increase a woman's risk for breast cancer? Should women be concerned if they gain 15-25 pounds of "middle-aged spread" as they age?

Feigelson: Breast cancer risk begins to increase when adult weight gain (defined as weight gain since age 18) is more than 20 pounds. A recent American Cancer Society Study found that women who gained 21-30 pounds since age 18 were 40% more likely to develop breast cancer than women who had not gained more than 5 pounds, and women who gained 70 pounds doubled their risk.

Further, excess weight greatly increases the risk for metastatic tumors, which are more difficult to treat than tumors that have not spread. Women who gained more than 60 pounds since age 18 were 3 times more likely to have metastatic breast cancer than women who gained less than 20 pounds as an adult.
Q: Will losing weight reduce my risk of breast cancer?

Doyle: Recent studies do show that losing weight can help lower the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer. The key message for women is its really never too late to start living healthier.

Hi Twirly,

Well done for losing that 2 and a half pounds! Brilliant.  But is it really a treat for your body to go to the chippy? If you look at the ingredients that are used in most chippies - some use lard or animal fats others use vegetable fats to fry in and if you have things in batter there are some fairly ghastly ingredients in that.

I think that when you are losing weight there is a mentality that you are missing something and doing without - whereas if you eat healthily - all the time - you shouldn't ever feel that you are missing out on something and all your efforts will be wasted when you have struggled to lose this weight only to put it back on - to give yourself a "treat"!

I am speaking from experience and now eat a healthy diet - yes I do occasionally have a choccy binge - but very rarely - as I know how slippery the slope is!!!!

Keep going though and well done so far!

Remember to make use of the early sunny mornings coming up - Early exercise makes you feel better through the day and you don't want to eat the rubbish later because you feel good from your hard work. Otherwise you eat the rubbish during the day and exercise the guilty way by trying to get rid of what you have put on - go for the happy, feelgood methods rather than the more depressing guilty exercise methods.

If you have access to a cross trainer, running machine, rowing machine etc - any with a calorie counter - use them. They are great for a confidence boost. Whilst they may not be totally accurate, it is a great feeling to see that you have burned around 100 calories after 20 minutes!

Flipping 'eck Wilko - what a magnificent loss!  Brilliant or what!  Doesn't matter if it was all fluid or whatever that is a stunning loss in anyone's book.

Keep going and 2lb for next week - easy peasy!  You seem to have the knack!

Well done Wilko!  Doesn't matter what it is as long it's been done sensibly.  Keep up the good work.  Twirly, I used to do the same thing, come out of Slimming World and go straight to the Kentucky fried chicken place lol - needless to say I dont do it anymore lol.  I think I'm just in the mind set now that no food is "bad" as long as it's in moderation and that seems to be working for me.  If I tell myself something is bad then I want it even more.

Yuck, I just had my first "tracker" at the gym, where they take measurements of waist, bust, hips, upper thighs, calves, upper arms and wrists as well measure levels of water etc.  Lets just say I failed the water one miserably (there's water in coffee, how does that work??!! lol), I'm just in the Obese category.  So my target is to lose 4lb in the next 6 weeks and to get my water level up from 40.8 to 53%.  Thankfully my gym is very good and focuses more on inch loss than weight loss, my personal end target is to get from a size 18-20 back down to a 14-16, any lower and I can't maintain it, well I can, if I don't want a life at the same time!

Best thing about my gym, not a mirror or weight in sight - marvellous!

Well done to you all, I am very impressed.

Finally plucked up the courage to stick my first pain patch on..last night at 6pm, I seem OK, except feeling sick, so probably not much food for the weekend. I did stop taking all my other pain pills which I was supposed to stay on, so I am seizing up quickly but... I was so scared of the patches I wanted to do it gradually, so will re intoduce them later tonight with half doses. I am hoping by mid week I will be on the full regime, no side effects and much more comfortable, then maybe I can start doing other things again and the weight loss might be easier.

I laughed when I read excercise with tins of beans..I can't even lift one high!!!

Next week though I might be juggling with them LOL

I signed up for a gym today, a nice simple quiet gym rather than the techno blasting beautiful people type gym  :o
Ive got my induction tomorrow so I expect to be  :-[ feeling abit like this after getting measured/weighed etc.
Ive read the Gary Taubes book 'Diet Delution' & no-longer have any fears about a high protein low carb way of losing weight. I began in earnest today  ;)

Hope everyone is feeling encouraged by their weightloss  ;)
Im mega happy today...jumped on the scales & have lost 3lbs in 3 days on a lowish carb diet (no where near as strict as Atkins just cutting out bread, pasta, chocolate, cake, breakfast cereals etc). I even had strawberries & clotted cream every single day  ;D
I know the weightloss is mostly water at this stage but I am just overjoyed to see the  scales moving in the right direction.

Thanks for the encouragement Marg, good to hear Im not the only one having the odd indulgence  ;)
Knowing that I have allowed myself strawberries & cream is really helping me to not feel deprived so Im not craving all the stuff Ive cut out. When following diets strictly in the past I always end up feeling deprived...when that happens I always fall off the wagon & overeat in a big way :-[

Hope everyone is having a great day

Well done everyone. Just be careful if you're going the low-carb way, as you may be accidentally training your metabolism to burn them slower as it gets used to not getting enough - meaning that you could put some of the weight back on if you stop dieting. Have you thought of maybe swapping some of the carbs for low-GI ones? So cutting out cake good, but instead of abandoning all carbs, maybe swap spuds for pasta or basmati rice? Low GI carbs like these will burn off much slower so keeping you full for longer.

This would be much more credible if I hadn't eaten nearly an entire pack of smarties this afternoon. Plonker.  :-\

Well, I have been reading this thread and admiring you all. I was too scared to commit myself, after years of failed diets.

I had results of blood tests back today, and I have high cholestrol and high sugar readings. I have to have them checked again in 2 weeks, but it has made me think. I was 6stone 12 when I married. 4 Kids later , I am about 10 and half stone.

So I have decided to bite the bullet and try to get the weight down, as it is a factor in type 2 diabetes. I am sat here with a glass of fizzy water instead of supper, and already panicking at the thought of failling again. So I thought a bit of comeraderie would help boost my determination.

I'll get a more accurate weight in the morning.

I have got a book from the library which looks at why we eat and why so much. Hopefully that will help a bit. One bit of advice I will try to follow is to taste and enjoy every mouthful, rather than not notice eating.

Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: posie on April 25, 2008, 08:19:40
I think CJ, possibly the best way to think of it is as a lifestyle change rather than a diet, a diet implies a temporary change whilst you get your weight down and then a return to "normality" once you have.  If you make a lifestyle change, you're simply changing the way you view and eat food, nothing to succeed or fail at, just change for the better.  :)

We're all with you, I just weighed myself and I've put a pound on! Grrrr - oh well, extra 5 minutes on the cross trainer for me today!  :(

Hi everyone  ;D
Sarah & Posie I know how frustrating that is to regain the loss. Have you taken measurements of key body areas such as waist, hips, thighs?
Often even when I seem to regaining pounds I am still losing inches... ;)

Hi Bupster yes im pretty sure that the downfall of low carbing is that if you go back to the carbs you've been avoiding the weight piles back on. I am approaching the low carb eating as a lifestyle change rather than a diet & have decided to give up all white carbs for good (pasta, rice, sugar, flours, etc). Im just not thinking of them as acceptable foods anymore. Ive never liked fizzy drinks like cola because they are so manufactured so Im mentally adding the white overly processed carbs to that category of 'unreal foods'. Im hoping that with time not eating these things will just seem normal to me  ;)
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: carolinej on April 25, 2008, 13:33:14
Posie, I agree. It has to be a total lifestyle change. Proof is how heavy I am after so many diets. A friend of mine says that dieting makes you fat, as every time she stops, she gets bigger than before.

I am thinking of working on a "I never eat.......list" eg, butter ;D

Crystalmoon, I think I will take a few measurements. Good idea.

cj :)

Got a fitness assessment and measurement thing on Sunday. Which would be great, as I went for a run today as well as spending hours on the allotment, but tomorrow I'm going to the real food festival at Earls Court and am booked into two cheese and wine tastings! Oh well, back to the grindstone.

Crystalmoon, I think you're probably doing exactly the right thing - only don't throw out the pasta yet. In GI tests for diabetic diets, white bread and jacket spuds were the absolute worst, and jasmine rice, but pasta and basmati rice, and to some extent brown rice, were ok. Your body needs carbohydrate for a healthy metabolism so maybe just get rid of the highly processed stuff and watch portion sizes? I know the latter is my downfall as I really love food, and if there's something I enjoy I eat loads of it. Hoping to do what you're doing and make a lifestyle change - have given up butter more or less for good, for example. However, no point banning stuff or I'll feel deprived, so I sometimes have butter and white bread if out to dinner.

Listen to me banging on. Well done everyone was what I meant to say.

Have lost another lb this week, making 29lb this year ;D I have a feeling it might be slower to go now but I am feeling positive
I have noticed that if I cut carbs too low I feel very bad tempered the next day
I have found the only way for me to not overeat on bread is to not eat any at all, eating too much bloats me out anyway but I do eat crispbreads, rice and potatoes even in the form of ovenchips and as a treat ,a pie once a week  :o

Went for fitness assessment today - I am much fitter than I was, and my lung capacity is well above average (not bad given that I smoked for 16 years!) but I'm actually bigger than I was before - though half a stone lighter than the last measurement! I thought I'd be the same but skinnier, but this fitness thing means I'm actually changing shape all over the place. Very odd - but quite exciting.  :D

Stayed the same this week- so will have to try really hard to reach my first target next Monday. I think that celebratory glass of red last week did it - or the fatal blunder of stocking cheese in the fridge again.

Bupster, well done.

Suzanne, cheese is FAR too nice, eh?  ;D I love it too, along with peanuts, which I once heard were the biggest waste of calories in the whole food world :-\ Why is all the nice stuff fattening ::)

Got on the scales this morning and was dead chuffed with 10st 1. So I've lost 3 pounds.

I am exercising like mad, never sitting still though. Also I am eating loads of salad. It's one I invented, and have named 'Mampango'. Its lots of salad leaf (I love lambs lettuce) onion, tomato, chopped up mango (tinned is cheaper though probably not so low cal) balsamic vinegar , salt, and a miniscule amount of feta cheese crumbled in it if I am feeling generous. Mmmm :P. Keeps me going when I get the munchies ;D

I've found the tick-box visuals of the Healthy Eating Pyramid really useful:

http://www.healthyeatingclub.com/your-health/HECpyramid/index.htm

Ignore the naff looking website address, the pyramid lets you work out if you're eating the recommended weekly portions of meat, veg, dairy etc and is based on work done by the Australian government. I haven't found anything so easy to use and useful from UK agencies.

I also lost two small packs of butter this week!  :D For ridiculous reasons attached to when new year fell this year I weigh myself on Tuesdays at 6:30 am. Nice people at Tesco diets keep telling me that losing 1-2lb per week is the most sustainable rate of weight loss so I'm trying not to be cross with myself for stuffing myself stupid at the Real Food Festival on Saturday  ;)

Has anyone tried olive oil as a help to weight loss? Sounds a bit too good to be true ::)

All my diet recipes substitute olive oil for pretty much everything. I love the flavour and have learned to do without butter (though I miss it) and other fats. Not sure about the "lite" versions. Interesting about the "smoking" part though.

Just done my weigh in for the week, I'm losing weight again, after 3 weeks of not losing (but not gaining either)!

Now lost 14.5lbs in total, in 10 weeks  ;D

And can get into clothes which I bought a year ago, and have never worn  ;D

And I've had to adjust my belt, and put in new holes - by 4.5 inches!!!!!  ;D

So happy, there's still a long way to go, but what I'm doing seems to be working, and is not too difficult to maintain

Weighed in today and hae lost 2lbs - so just half a pound short of half a stone so far (like talking in stones even if it is fractions as it sounds more  ::) ) But goodness I am tired today - 2lbs due to a full 7 hour stint on lottie on Saturday, full house clean yesterday and then 6 hours to completely spring clean conservatory plus 2 hours dgging on lottie again today.

As usual celebrated with the usual glass of plonk and choose white this time so it couldn't lead onto cheese.

good day y'all

Never ever ever EVER thought that I would participate in any form of diet/weight loss regime, always thought that if you eat less and do more it's bound to come off, what's the problem - just goes to show how little I know.

I think/thought that my diet (apart form beer and chocolate - in quantities that I am not willing to discuss) together with  the amount of exercise that I do (besides digging) meant that I wasn't going to put any weight on - that was 2st ago.

So, since christmas we (wife and I) have been more reflective on the amount we eat, we have joined the gym (and go 2-3 time per week), I have cut out lunch time beers, started to learn ball-room dancing and still do the digging etc - and so far exactly 0 lbs have been lost - although my clothes fit a little better than before and I definitely have more life in me (these are worth it  without the weight loss).  Apart from lopping a leg off I couldn't see any way of losing weight - until yesterday ....

I weigh myself a couple of times a week (I know - don't do that, but it's the first time (ever) that I have had access to a scale).  My weight swings back and forth by about 4 lbs - then yesterday it seems to have suddenly dropped by 7 lbs - just hoping that I have actually really lost a couple of pounds.

So, what I wanted to say was "good an yer all, and stick with it" - I never really realised just how hard losing weight was - even though loads of people had said it was.  But it's worth it.

Had lost 6 lb, but went away for 24hrs and ate too much :-[ Scales saying I put on 2lb, but I hope most of that is just bulk from the extra food and will disappear soon......hoping ::)

theothermarg : one of the perks of weight loss , eh? ;D ;D ;D

Wilko : Over a stone and no one has noticed! :o I bet you can tell though. No more breathing in to do up your trousers ;D

Weight watchers tomorrow and I am fearing the worse having spent a long weekend in North Devon and then having a big ole family BBQ today. Oh well, back on the straight and narrow tomorrow, you do only live once after all.

Hi everyone, a big hello to all the new people  ;D
Sorry I havent posted in awhile but things went seriously wrong with the low carb diet approach & my body  ::)
I was loving the quick weight loss & finding it easy to stick to until I started to have awful pains in my abdomen  :o I ended up at the hospital because my doctor thought I needed an emergency op to remove my appendix....to cut a long story short it turns out that my gall bladder was really not coping with the fat content of the low carb way of eating & I had a 4 day stay in hospital waiting for it to calm down enough for the surgeons NOT to remove it  :o
I still may have to have it removed if it flares up again but hopefully if I stick to the restrictive & low fat way of eating suggested by the surgeons it will recover fully.
So their really is some truth in the concerns about low carb/high fat diets being seriously dangerous for your body.
And all the weight I had lost came flying back on as soon as I stopped eating the low carb way  :-\ so it is back to the drawing board for me on the weightloss front.

Hi crystalmoon! sorry you have been unwell but thanks for the warning :o
I have tried the atkins but couldn,t stand the fat, felt unwell at such low carbs and put all the weight straight back on
what did the doctor say about eating white carbs? I would have thought that it was good cutting them down or at least replacing them with wholegrain ones :-\
of course we all have different dietary need and you have just found out the hard way that your bod doesn,t like fat. I know if I get really bad tempered it is usually because I have not ate enough carbs the day before
it looks like you will be on healthy eating from now on and this time I expect it will come off slowly and stay off
take care marg

Oh no! Poor you. Hope you're feeling better.

If you do decide to try again, try the GI thingy by Jennie Brand Miller. Developed for diabetics so it's safe and low fat. But I wouldn't blame you if you hid in a corner and shrieked every time  you heard the word diet.

All the best  :-\

Crystal Moon hope you get better soon and sorry to hear about the bad effects of the low carb diet.

I am on weightwatchers (or fatfighters for anyone who has watched little Briatain)  and put on 1 lb this week and really can't understand it. I have tracked and only eaten my points and whats more as the weather was good have been at the lottie everyday after work either doing hard physical graft in clearing the old raspberry bed, or hoeing and planting out.

Ah well will persevere - perhaps its a blip on the scales  ::).

Sorry to hear you have had problems Crystalmoon.  I tried the Atkins diet a few years ago but avoided fat.  I lost a stone but it went back on very quickly when I came off the diet.

Suzanne, maybe you have been replacing fat with muscle.  I agree with Carolinej that it could be fluid retention as my feet were very swollen yesterday.

I am continuing with my steady "cutting down and working hard in the garden" diet and my loss for this week is 1½ lbs, making a total loss of 6lbs.

How is everyone else doing?
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: Crystalmoon on May 13, 2008, 09:40:41
Hi there theothermarg the surgeons have put me on a really restrictive diet for now...no dairy, no meat or fowl (fish is ok but not fried), no fried foods, no white carbs, no gluten, no sugar, avoid processed foods as much as possible, no brassicas, no fats like butter or margarines, no tea or coffee, no tap water  :-\ the list goes on & on......this is supposed to reduce the stress my gall bladder & liver is under & hopefully will enable the inflammation to reduce ( my intestines are also inflamed). They think there are some underlying food intolerances that are also causing immune system problems. I hope once they have done all their tests & decided on a course of treatment that I can expand what I can eat because salad has already become boring  ::)

Hi bupster, yes I wondered about the Gi/Gl diets. Will ask the hospital about them.

Hi Suzanne, I also wondered about joining weightwatchers but as Im living on a really tight budget Ive never got around to it...I think its the having to pay each week even if you dont attend that puts me off...is it like that where you are? If I could go twice a month & didnt have to pay for the rest of the month I could maybe afford it.

Post by: Crystalmoon on May 13, 2008, 09:44:33
Hi Paulines7 I guess the diet the doctors have me on is low carb low fat so I expect I will lose weight but I dont think it is sustainable due to being so restrictive so expect I will gain back what I lose  ::)
I think in the long run I really will have to learn to eat only to satisfy hunger...I know I often eat when Im fatigued & should just go to bed alot earlier than I do  :-\
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: bupster on May 13, 2008, 11:12:41
Me too, especially at work - will eat sugar just for an energy boost. I reckon that if I got to bed an hour earlier each night I'd lose weight so much more easily, but it's dead easy to have an extra couple of glasses of wine instead. I'm rubbish  :-\

Tiredness is my main problem! I reckon my bod thinks tiredness and anxiety
and hunger has all the same feeling and what is the easiest, quickest thing to do about it, eat of course1 my main problem is that I get up 5-30 am and work till 10am but OH is still wide awake at 12 and has only just had his breakfast when I get home  He is not in the best of health so doesn,t work
christlemoon it sounds like with that diet your weight might get sorted tho it,s a hard way to find out that fat doesn,t suit you. I hope you will be able to eat a wider range of food soon
I went to slimming classes once, hated it! and I,m far too tight to part with that kind of money to get bossed aroundlol

Agree with everyone - I often can't sleep so have used food in the past to replace sleep. It's a killer trying to lose weight and still not sleeping - my OH has given me a new nickname - snapdragon  ::), and unfortunately mentioned it to some work colleagues so it's starting to stick. You would have thought after the 20 years we have been together he would have learnt by now. Ah well revenge can be so sweet.  ;D
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!
Post by: Jeannine on May 14, 2008, 21:03:54
Hi Suzanne, I am a non sleeper too, and I can relate. I think the lonliest thing in the world is being awake when  most everyone else is sleeping. I got so cranky with my poor husband when he could sleep and I couldn't I am surprised he is even here bless him.

Trouble is now (and for sometime too )I have given in and take a pill. I sleep easily but would you believe the side effects are eating, honest I am not kidding. As the tablet starts to work I feel I want to eat, if I don't eat I fall asleep just fine, but if I do eat a little bit, I eat more and more and more, it is as if my body has lost the cut off feeling that we get, and worse still the craving is for sweet things which I usually don't eat anyway because I simple don't like sweet stuff, It is really weird.

I guess we just can't win on some things eh!

I have lost 5 1/4 pounds this week, too much but don't know why I am not doing anything different from the weeks before?

I am doing alot of exercise though; Swimming 1/2 mile every weekday morning and going to a 2 classes and 1 session on my own in the gym per week. Weight watchers this morning and have shed another 2.5 pounds, so another bag of sugar slips away.  Exercise is key for me and gardening in the heat is helping.  I have also started picking salad leaves from the allotment so lovely home grown salads are on the menu from now on.

It is definately easier to loose weight in the summer for me. I dont like salad in the winter....far too chilly. I'd happily have a meal of tomatoes fresh from the greenhouse, and still warm, mmmmm.

I weighed this morning, and have lost a total of 8 pounds now. (I cant remember how much since last time ::)) I am really pleased. Yesterday, I managed to get a pair of trousers on that I had long given up on. I had to give them a go, as my usual ones are loose enough to fall down!!! ;D

Well done to everyone with their weight loss. It is a real inspiration to see your success ;D

crystalmoon, I hope you are feeling a bit better now. Have you had the OK to eat other foods yet? I bet the weight is shifting, being so restricted in what you can eat!

I haven't been reporting lately, but I'm off on holiday for 8 days starting tomorrow, so I am happy to have done what I set out to - and that is get down to my weight level of May 2003 (70.5kg). I just hope I won't gain too much while I am in Spain because I now feel comfortable in trousers I haven't been able to wear for more than 3 years. All my jeans are really baggy. A good reason to buy some new ones  ;D ;D.

Sorry I didn't post last week as I mssed my weigh in - as we were off work we went to a restaurant instead after working on the garden all day.

Anyway did got the weigh in this week and I have lost 2 lb over the two weeks - so currently averaging 1 lb a week. So for the 8 weeks I have been on the diet I have lost 8 lb - slow going - but perseverance will pay off (I am told). I have 14 weeks to go before my big French holiday - so if all goes well I should hit my target well before then.

Well, she really ought to ::)

She  had lost quarter of a kilo, but I think that may have gone back on again since I've been feeding her some non diet food to try to make sure she gets all her vitamins (after the dog poo eating incident)

Oh, for anyone who doesnt know , Gypsy is my dog , not my daughter ;D

She always looses a bit in the summer, as she is in the garden a lot, just like me ;D It's always so much easier when it's hot and a salad  is tempting. Cold winter days tempt me to eat much more fattening comfort food :-\

Still, summer is on its way and we'll all be able to get out a bit more and eat nice home grown fruit and veg ;D

Well done, Marge.  ;D

Perhaps it would be an idea to keep something that used to fit you before you lost the weight. You can put it on every time you feel you may be slipping back into your old ways ;D

I am also wondering how I will feel when the weight is off and it is just maintenance. At the mo I keep getting small milestones, like another hole tighter on my belt, or getting into another item of clothing I had given up on. I find these things an inspiration.

I'll watch and learn from you marge, as you are only 4lb away from it, whereas I have a stone to go yet ::)

Well done everyone for losing so much weight.

For the last four weeks I have been having problems with very swollen feet and ankles so with all the extra water it is difficult to know if I am losing fat.  The scales show that I am only 3lbs off what I weighed at the beginning, but the rings on my fingers are quite loose so when the water goes I am hoping for a considerable drop in weight.

My secret.......attacking 4' high nettles/thistles/grass etc with a sickle 'cos the petro-driven strimmer is poorly-sick & in for repair.

I bought two new pairs of trousers the other day, both a size less than I normally wear & both pairs are already quite loose, oh well, looks like it's belts from now on.

Um now how do I start saying why I'm FINALLY trying to lose weight? lol

OK here goes,,,, OH has developed very swollen legs and has had many investigations to make sure its not his heart, it isn't, but it is his weight. OH weighs nearly 26 stone. Veinous insufficiency.

I stopped Nursing to care for my Mum who has Alzheimer's and so have put on a lot of weight myself through comfort eating and over large portions.

So, to help OH I decided to book us both into the nurse lead clinic for weight reduction, the Healthy Eating and Lifestyle clinic we have at our doctors surgery.

My target was 12lbs my OH target was 5 stone, in the same time frame!!!!!!

So far I have dropped a jeans size, from size 22 to 20, OH has dropped nothing!! Grrr!!!

Anyway I got fat eating relatively healthily (never eat puds or sweets as I love savoury food) so Ill get thinner eating that way just smaller portions and not so much cream in the cabbage or butter on the spuds etc.

I am going to suture OH mouth closed if he doesn't lose any weight!

OH and I don't weigh myself as I know I would be horrified so I go by jeans sizes. I have jeans from size 12 to 24 in my wardrobe. :(

I think it's like stopping smoking. It's something in your subconscious that says: I can do this now and you do. Sticking to it is something else but if your mindset is right it will happen. It doesn't really matter what you do either - a healthy eating plan with regular meals backed up with exercise at whatever level you can is often all it takes.

Thank you Jeanine.
I have told OH that it is up to him to lose weight as he is ultimatly responsible for what he eats whether I am with him or not. Its his body that is rebelling!

That is so true Grawc, it is a mind set, but he gave up smoking so I know he can do the healthy eating thing if only he would try!!

Example; yesterday we went to buy a new petrol stimmer for the allotment and on the way is a restuarant that serves a chinese lunch 'All you can eat buffet' OH said "Lets call in and have a meal"
My reply was "No sweetie we would eat too much but if you really want a chinese meal lets have one tonight but one dish each only."
OH went mardy all afternoon as he cant see what healthy eating is!!
Title: Re: Lose weight with us here!!!

My problem is, I am so busy that I eat very irregularly, I don't eat a lot, but I do eat on the run. I don't eat out either,I am just too picky fir that!! Then I am not as mobile as I like due to a problem from ealrlier in the year.

The best way I lose weight is when I have the time to plan, then I have to eat 5 times a day and never miss, eat at the table not on laps.

I tend not to eat at all till I feel faint, then I do eat, not a lot, but I have trained my metabolism to slow down so much.. I have to get back to eating much more often.

It seems daft to say it, but eating 5 times a day and I do lose weight.

School out after Tuesday so I will get the chance!!!

Ishard, take him shopping straight after dinner!!

Jeannine you need to put yourself at the top of the list and make it happen! Once you've lost a bit - even a few pounds - you'll begin to feel better, clothes will quickly feel looser and that is motivation in itself.

I kind of missed the boat in April, but like you, now I'm on holiday, I've made a start and already I feel the weight peeling off. Not fast enough for impatient me, of course, but fast enough that, even after a few days I'm feeling things a bit looser than before.

One strange side effect, as someone who has dieted before and never had this experience, is that I am sleeping 10-12 hours a night (normally 6-8). But then I think probably I'm catching up on all the sleepless hours since Peter died.
Anyway todat for the first time in over a year I don't feel tired, so that's progress too!

Off for breakfast now at 11.52!! :-[

Jeanine eating 5 or 6 times per day is a good way to get your metabolism kick started, so Im told. Its what the Slimming World diet is based on.

Eg. Bfast 1 egg (poached) 2 rashers bacon (grilled), tinned toms

snack; 1 carton cottage cheese, 1 apple

Lunch; 2 slices wholemeal bread (no butter), salad  and 2 slices lean ham, 1 low fat yogurt, 1 piece of fruit

Snack; 1 small tin of tuna (not in oil) 2 crisbreads

Dinner; Small baked potato, grilled meat or fish, any veg and/or salad, home made fresh fruit salad and yogurt

Snack; 1 cup of soup, 1 fruit

I know I lose weight on that sort of diet and am never hungry, but cannot always make time to do it.

Broke my ankle in June and thought I'd put on all the weight I'd lost, especially after 16 days in hospital unable to get out of bed and eating rubbish food. Strangely enough, I've actually lost some! I think it's a combination of not eating as much, as I haven't so much appetite, eating often to keep up my metabolism - have to eat often as otherwise painkillers knock me out - not drinking at all (reckon this is a big contributor) and sleeping more. I know that when I'm gaining weight I do the opposite of all the above. Hope it carries on, would be ace to be slimmer when I finally get to go back to work, even if I will be the palest person in the office!

Well done Cam, that's a good deal to lose especially when you have been on a diet for a few months.

My weight is beginning to go down but very slowly.  My ankles are not swollen now so that may account for the loss of weight, but at least I am ½ stone lighter than I was in April and they weren't swollen then.

One problem is that I have a very low pulse.  It was 36 on one occasion and 39 on another.  I have to see the Cardiology consultant on Thursday.  I do plenty of exercise, for example, I have been digging the garden this morning and putting in some plants.  I am now off to dig up the garlic and put in my sweetcorn which are still in pots and the cobs have already formed.  I hope they survive.

Well done Cam.

I have been wired up since yesterday with a portable ecg around my neck.  I have to go to the hospital this afternoon to have it taken off.  My heart misses beats and that is the reason for my slow pulse rate.  Although it doesn't affect me now apart from swollen ankles, they think it may be a problem when I get older.  After having the ecg removed today I have not got to go back for two months unless they find anything more serious when they run through the machine, in which case they will ring me.

My weight is static at the moment so at least I am not gaining.   ;D

there was a piece on dieting in the Daily Telegraph today. A strategy they recommend is eating your meals in the nude, preferably in front of a full length mirror

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/main.jhtml?xml=/health/2008/09/08/hnaked108.xml (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/main.jhtml?xml=/health/2008/09/08/hnaked108.xml)

she doesn't need to go on a diet, that's for sure  ;D

 Hi,

I used to be pretty obese and started putting on a lot of weight especially on my thighs and bottom in my late thirties. I started exercising as often as possible and also cut down on a lot of high calorie stuff. Unfortunately I hardly managed to lose any weight at all. I then recently read an article by a lady who claimed that she managed to lose nearly half of her weight using a particular weight loss product. I tried it out and it actually worked really well. Within 4 months I managed to shave off 65 pounds completely. The results were pretty amazing and I feel so much healthier and energetic now without having to carry all that extra weight around. You can read more about the lady's article at the link below

Sorry don,t believe in quick weight loss products! (been there got the T-shirt)
I have lost over 3st (42lb) in 6 monthes by changing what I eat and feel better for it1 I tried eating some sweet stuff and floundered a bit in the last few weeks
as I find it very addictive I would have to do without it if I were diabetic so feel this is the way to go

theothermarge, I know what you mean by eating sweet stuff. I suppose it is worse than any other food, as it has lots of fat AND sugar.

I have lost 2 stone now and am trying to maintain my weight.I think it is going to be harder than losing it in the first place. So I have decided that I dont eat butter, cakes, biscuits, chocolate and sweets.

It seems a bit drastic, but I am the sort of person that cant stop when I start.

I also do a lot of visiting, and used to end up eating loads of cake and choccie biscuits every day. Well, it didnt seem polite to refuse ;D

Everyone is used to me being on a diet now, and some people offer me fruit instead. So I am going to keep that up.

I cant put the weight back on now anyway, as I got rid of all my bigger clothes as a deterrent ::)

Caroline that is wonderful, well done to you, you too Marge. What I lost is back on but I need to get things under control again,, it seems I  still always so busy to plan. Eating on the run is my downfall.

We are trying to work through our totally packed large chest freezer so we can sell it before we move, so we have this rule that what the hand touches when we open the lid...we eat. Joh just cxame in w ith  3 litre pot of Rum and Raisin ice cream... but luckily I don't eat it anyway>

Maybe when we get settled I can get a stable relaxed life, with a bit of luck!!

Good luck to you all, keep it up.

Same in the doggie world. Gypsy ( KC Cavalier) has been on diet food and no treats or human food for 4 years and is a little barrel.

Her friend Amber (also a KCC) has biscuits, whatever her owners are having and even a bit of cereal every morning with sugar and off a spoon, is thin.

It would be bad news if this phenomena existed in the bird world :o ;D

Not much fun at dinner tonight..we pulled out a haggis, John doesn't eat it so he found a frozen meat pie so I got to eat the thing..it was absolutely disgusting..I forced down a few bites and gave up.. so I guess you could say it is slimming. I do like haggis but this was terrible.

Tomorrows dinner is a large uncooked turkey drumstick.I use them fro making stock so this one will have to a soup I guess.

I think you may find it a bit tastier if you cook it ;)

Was the haggis one of those in a plastic case or the geniune sheeps stomach?

The plastic covered ones are quite awful!!!

Wierd comment from a veggie I know, but I USED to eat them.

Plastic.. and would you believe I had it sent overnight from an Aberdeen butcher along with some other stuff I can't get here.

Turkey leg, was trimmed, diced, and turned into a hot /sweet  red pepper stirfry, not bad considering I don't like turkey.

I get to pick from the freezer tonight!!!

MacSween's haggis are one of the best, Jeannine.http://www.macsween.co.uk/ (http://www.macsween.co.uk/) I think you can probably even get them in Canada!!

Cj they also do vegetarian ones.

Thanks grawc, looks interesting. I'll pop and buy one next time I am in Swansea (nearest supplier)

According to my scottish sister in law, white pudding is veggie too. HAve you tried that? Not bad, but not like haggis really.

I would disagree as to white(mealie) pudding being veggie, well the original one anyway. It doesn't have meat but it is certainly full of animal fat...  fat, oatmeal, onion and seasoning and that's it and packed in a skin .Johns eats tons of them!!. There may well be a veggie one now though as Grawc said about the haggis which surprised me.. I will too have  a go at that and the meatie one..thanks Grawc.

Dinner for me tonight was Sushi...

Jeannine is quite correct. White pudding usually contains pork and/or suet. I believe there is a version that substitutes vegetable fat for the animal fat which would therefore be classed as vegetarian but I've never eaten it myself so can't comment.

How about some recommendations for yummy low calorie food?

I love quorn .

My favorite way of eating it at the mo is to fry up some peppers and onions in a tiny bit of olive oil. Add the quorn, and then some fajita seasoning. Pop it in a brown pitta bread with salad.Mmmmm.

For a really low calorie cream, I put semi skimmed milk in a jug and froth it for ages with the steam jet. Scoop off the froth and use that. It doesnt stay frothed for long and isnt perfect, but is nice with fruit, sugar free jelly etc.

Come on then, lets get these suggestions coming in thick and fast to counteract Jeannines 'ice cream temptation' ;D

May I join?  It’s the male half of Melbourne12 here.  Once again my truly appalling lifestyle has caught up with me.  I work long hours and live in hotels during the week, so I get no exercise and it’s only too easy to have a couple of glasses of wine and eat high calorie food every night.

As a result, my weight has skyrocketed to 19 stone.  Not only that, but at a recent medical I was told off for high cholesterol.  So a bit of dieting is called for.  I started at the beginning of this week, two days ago.

As Timiano said early in this thread, it’s not difficult to keep track of energy input and output.  So with the help of my trusty spreadsheet, I’m trying to limit my intake to around 1800 kCals per day.  To my embarrassment, I’ve worked out that I must have been scoffing 3000 a day to get to the weight that I now am.  :-[

But even if I keep my intake at 1800 kCals a day, it’ll be March 2012 before I reach my target weight of ten and a half stone.  And even that would be considered on the verge of overweight by the quacks.  So rather a long haul, I fear.

Still, the journey of a thousand miles, and all that.  :)

I have put on half a stone!   :(  I went to the hospital this morning to get the results of why my pulse is so low at times.  It seems I have a heart murmur and arrhythmia so have got to have a heart scan and then have a pace maker fitted.  I was told that this would probably help me to become more active and hopefully I should then lose some weight.   :D

Haven't been on here for ages, forum too depressing when I couldn't get to allotment, but I've been up today and pulled out some of the weeds, so I'm back to post!

I also managed to get into town today and tried on some jeans - one pair fit but they were a tiny bit loose, so I assumed they were the size twelve and took them off ready to try on the size 10 to discover that the pair I'd tried were the smaller size! I haven't been a size 10 since I was at college eight years ago. Dieting tip for today: Break your ankle.

Seriously, I've been more or less off the booze for most of the last four months, so even with the slightly dodgy diet (much choc) and little exercise, the weight's fallen off. I hadn't realised just how many empty calories there are in alcohol. I do now!
