Snakes Alive!

Well one grass snake and 2 slow worms. Two of them were hiding under the plastic covering the turf stack and the other slow worm was under a piece of ply that I moved. Nice warm spots in the sun -but still out of site.

Well I was pretty nervous about the grass snake -I know it's one now, wasn't so sure when I lifted the cover

We have found a slow worm already this year, but no snakeys yet.  Love them!

Do grass snakes bite??

Never ever seen either of them.  I lifted a pot the other day and found a millipede. Thats about as exciting as it gets!

I don't believe so Marianne, I think their fangs are tooo soft to penetrate our skin, but of course I live to be corrected.  Adders are the ones you have to keep an eye out for, but they are more scared of us than us of them.  The only reason people get bitten is because the either interfere with them, or pick something up or disturb them where they are hiding/sun bathing.  We get adders sun bathing on the corrigated metal sheeting that one of the old chaps has his compost heap built from.

I must admit if I saw any snake, I would be away like road-runner !     

They terrify me but they are creatures of god and have the right to respect, as you say.

the closest I have ever been to one is in a zoo aviary.

Emma Jane is right Marianne grass snakes don't bite but they do give off a defensive, horrible smell if handled. Good little swimmers they are too and quite pretty to look at.

I have a very small raised border which  I built with some fancy bricks, Iwas looking at the heathers and thought "What is that at the bottom of the bricks?" (Takes a while for the old grey matter to register things  Anyhow it was a snake it then slithered of across my daughters garden next door and in to the wilderness (can't call it a garden) of her next doors neighbour.My daughter is hoping it will stay there!!!!!
