I don't have a pond but my next door neighbour does.  For the last few years I have had a number of frogs and toads living in my garden which I encourage so they can eat all my slugs and snails.  It's been a lovely weekend so I've spent many hours in the garden but I couldn't spy any of my friends.  Then, as I was trimming the lavender I spotted one!  Here's a picture I took of him last year.  Isn't he a beauty?

I've only found the baby black ones so far but they cause the most damage.

I love frogs and I hope I'm going to get them on my allotment.  I've been given an old plastic cistern (large) so I'm go to try and make a pond out of it.

Oh good luck with that.  Maybe a kindly neighbour could pass on some spawn?

I had two take up residence in the greenhouse last year and there were numerous little ones hopping about the garden, obviously coming from my neighbours pond.  I'm really pleased that Merlin isn't the kind of cat who like to play with them as their cries are so human.

I like the look of your 'Frog' but  is it not a Toad.  If it is a Frog I have been calling them Toads for years!!!!

I don't know, Carol.  You will notice that I very carefully didn't say whether my pic was of a frog or toad.   Wink

The concensus so far seems to be that it's a frog.  I've poured over many books and websites and on balance I think it is a frog because of its smooth skin.  I'm willing to stand corrected, though.   Smiley

It's a frog, or I had two toads in the greenhouse last year.  Grin
If he hops he's a frog, toads tend to be slower and walk rather than hop.

Hi Merlin's Mum.  Hop?  That picture was taken just after he had hopped about 4' out of the lavender bush, landing about 2' behind Fletcher.  Before I could take a picture of the two of them together he hopped another 4' straight over Fletch and into the shady border.  Fletch didn't notice any of this!   Grin

Hi Georgie,
Well I think that confirms it, he's a frog but of course he could be a she  Huh
Also frogs spend more of their lives in water, where as toads live in damp places and go to water to mate.  My Dad had a lot of toads where he lived and at night if it had been raining you had to look where you walking, shudder, I was always worried I would step on one.

Hi Marianne.  I don't think size is important as far as frogs and toads are concerned  Wink  Mine seem perfectly content in my little garden and they seem to like hiding under the low level shrubs and in the pots in the shady border.  The times I've 'jumped out of my skin' watering the pots in the evening as a huge 'buddy' jumps out in shock!

Grin Cheesy Haha Georgie - I can just imagine you being startled by Mr or Mrs Frog  Shocked  -  I can only hope one takes up residence in my little jungle.   Cheesy

Something is knorring at my delphiniums and I still haven't managed to find what it is.  Having a resident frog would soon get rid of the offender !

Let's hope ....  Wink
