Stan is more 'beetrooty' and Ollie is softer and sweeter! Grin

Beets are an odd one. Mine did well this year, after the slugs stopped eating the seedlings.

I cooked a Cylindra yesterday that weighed 1lb 12oz! Didn't photograph it though, sadly.

They are amazingly tender even at that size. More chutney!

Moonbells, I couldn't believe that such big beetroot would be tender, but they are. Slugs had a real feast on mine too, but I re-sowed and had a good crop later.

I think the trick is to grow them rapidly - then they stay tender.

Have half of one cubed as lunch today with some cheese. Filled the box!

I'm sure you're with the majority, Sarah. Never met a forono, so checked. Quote:
Forono is excellent for slicing. It consistently scored very highly in our taste tests. A pleasant fresh-tasting, mild but full flavour. Less sweet than many of the globe beetroot tasted.

Freshly dug beets have a buttery-sweet flavor that even kids will love.

Sweeter taste than other cylindrical beets.

Take your choice! Whichever, I still like white potatoes & white apron!!

Chris - I'd never met a Mangold Fly, either, so didn't know what was messing up my Beet & Chard - far worse than the speck in the photo. I've just been picking off the affected leaves & hoping. Even had I seen the fly, I would have just regarded it as "a fly"! Thank you so much for your post.

So THAT's what it was ?  Mangold Fly.  I just kept removing affected leaves pretending it would all be ok.  and it was !  the leaves just kept getting ruined, looked scorched but the roots were by and large fine !
