Cucumber tendrils

Are cucumber tendrils supposed to twine round poles or dig into the soil or something?   Mine are just hanging limp doing very little and must be about 12" long!

Sounds like something that is simple but I can't find the answer.
Neil (The Young Ones) once said "You plant the seed, the seed grows, you harvest the seed....You plant the seed....."   if only it was that simple!!!

They'll do it (cling) if they feel inclined - just as you want to change the direction it's growing in!!

PS They have to touch - even a leaf -  before they coil - unlike a bean, which searches.
