Green manure is a crop sown for either weed suppression or soil improvement or both. i.e. alfalfa, ryegrass, clover.

Some can be sown summer/autumn & left over winter to stop leaching of the soil.   In my case my soil is on the clay side of loam so I'm growing greem manure to be dug in to improve the soil texture.

The organic gardening catalogue has a good selection of green manure seeds if you're still interested.
