Your "picture" seems to be an empty file, Tim.

I would guess it's asparagus beetle - like this? https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=504 The beetles themselves look like this (top picture):

I'll have another go if you can get the picture to work.

Hope everything has appreciated the rain!

My garden is smaller than your Rome, but my pilum is harder than your sternum!

Thanks - I'll get back as soon as I can recover the photo.

But yes - probably!!

OK - done!

It looks like the same beasties to me - the RHS link says creamy grey-black, which looks about right.

It looks as though it's either pick off all you can find (do you have hens? they'll love them if you do), or spray/dust with something containing pyrethrum. Luckily there's no shortage of the latter, though I've no idea where your closest garden centre is out there.

Must check mine tomorrow...

Hope that's helped, please let us know what transpires.

looks like asparagus beetle lava to me and if you search google images with those words you will get similar pics
if you search on here too you  will find other threads about these
best to pick them off and swidge the adults unless you dont want to spray and then only a direct spray will help
In autumn when when you cut down the ferns do not compost them or leave them around to enable them to overwinter- you should burn or take off site.
they shouldnt destroy your asparagus bed and I don't think they attack the crowns only the surface foliage.
no respite but the adult beetles are quite pretty...
