Hi,

Has anyone got any tips as to how to net my fruit area - about 20' X 30', there seems to be different types of netting - nylon, plastic etc at different prices.

Am thinking of putting in posts then stringing wire between the tops and using this as a frame, any advice on types of netting, cheap sources would be greatly appreciated!!

Most of these are cheaper than garden centres even with delivery factored in. I have used all the companies above and not had any problems.

You could also ask at local scaffold firms as they have huge netting sheets they are happy to give away at times.

As to what type, I think I would not use a plastic one as it will not be as strong as polypropylene types. After all a fruit cage will be there for a number of years.

I really hate netting as I get very caught up with it!  I have found a supplier of white polyprop netting who will do 10M X 30M for £40.  I prefer the black stuff that looks like small chains and is softer but for a similar amount I think it would cost me £80+

The tip on scaffolders is interesting - there are some builders in the road opposite, I have been eyeing up their skip full of pallets so perhaps I'll pop over and ask.

I find that buying netting and fleece is very economical when bought on ebay.

Some people however do charge a large amount for postage, SO LOOK BEFORE YOU BUY!!!! :-\

I bought a 10m sheet of fleece for 99p + £1.50 for postage.

Giantseye, I just bought 10m of fleece from Focus do it all for £1.70, and no postage and packing! ;)  They also have protective netting for 12p a meter! (ours is outside and sold from a big roll)

I use old net curtains the added avantage is the birds dont see the fruit and dont get caught up in the nets. ;)
Also good for shading in the greenhouse so have a word with all the family.  Cheap is my middle name. :-[

or just go to the local charity shop for the net curtains, they usually have some.
