I saw our old plot neighbour growing a fresh fig spread across a fence wired in but I saw this one today In Lidl and thought as it showed a pot on the carton that it might thrive potted as suggested so ive potted it up in the pic............

........but didn't know if anybody else has successfully grown a potted fig or would it be better once established
to pot in on to earth against our back garden fence...?

any thoughts.....!!

cheers

I've had 2 growing in pots for about 4 years now but they don't seem to have grown much!  They do fruit a little bit each year though.

I'm sticking them in the ground this year as I want to end up with zillions of figs one day!

ACE

There is a school of thought that says restricting the roots promotes fruiting. Might be the reason my huge free growing fig tree never has any fruit.

The ground I'm putting mine in is really poor and stony with coral underneath ... I reckon it won't need walling in!

Debs

I've got one in a pot on the patio against a south facing wall. Bought it last year (not from Lidl. and its showing signs of 2/3 figs already

I used to work at West Dean College (tutor) and often noticed several different types of figs being beautifully grown in large pots in the famous gardens; plenty of fruit. They took them in during the winter.
