I thought these look and sounded interesting. Has anyone had any luck growing Heading Mustard?

I've bought a pack of Wa Wa Cai Choi' Zha Cai Heading Mustard (a.k.a. "The Thing") to try from Real seeds http://www.realseeds.co.uk/mustardgreens.html bottom of the page.
I've also have seeds of another variety Tainong Emperor.

I have.  The one from real seeds.

I sowed them at the end of summer and transplanted in to the greenhouse to follow the tomatoes in November.  They have grown slowly and steadily through the winter and have now just started to make their heads.

Before they head up - the large leaves with thick ribs are lovely additions to winter salads.  The ribs are juicy and crunchy like chinese cabbage ... but as you get towards the edge of the green leaves the pungency increases until the tips are nose-numbingly hot!  I haven't yet harvested the kohlrabi-like heads but will do soon and I'll let you know what they're like.

I've only tried them under glass.  I suspect they would do what all orientals do on my allotment if I put them outside - that would be to sulk in the cold and get eaten by slugs followed by bolting.  But all forms of Pak Choi, Chinese cabbage etc. do that on my plot.

Great to know thanks Squeezy, I don't know why with MUSTARD in the name I hadn't thought they were going to be hot! They sound great though.

Yes let us know how the 'heads' taste  :happy7:

Shame the oriental veggies sulk on your plot, have you tried them under a cloche or debris netting? I found Choy Sum Red Stem very easy last year, it's 'stalkier' and not as soft and succulent as say the pak choi I've tried, but good all the same.

I want to try mustards this year too. I love oriental greens so it'd be nice to see if I can actually grow them!
