Has anyone set any tomato seeds yet?
Am thinking of sowing some this weekend

Yes I've started some in a heated propagate a few weeks back. Mostly cherries for the greenhouse and some dwarf types. I'll be sowing some more varieties as soon as I get a chance.
The days are noticeable lengthening so more light available for seedlings, they shouldn't get too leggy in a bright spot.

Will your tomatoes be for greenhouse growing?

Yes the ones i am intending to sow this weekend will go in the greenhouse which can be heated in the evening.
The ones for the polytunnel will wait,  When should i look at starting those?

just ordered our chilli seeds this year from real seeds so will hopefully get them for the weekend

No, not yet but I'm about get some going very soon... :icon_cheers:
Usually  would have sown about half of the varieties I do...but this year I've tried to be more..umm..something... and been holding off of the eagerness.
Last year the spring were not going to happen and plants were late to go in... :BangHead:..this year it we haven't had proper winter..yet..and looks like spring is going to happen early...and I'm slow to get my seeds going.. :icon_scratch:
Not that it really maters that much as plants will always catch up ... :sunny:

I dont think spring is actually going to happen that early, we are now going to have a cooler period!
Ill be sowing onion sets in about 2 weeks me thinks, but definately not rushing this year as the is no point

I do have growlights and get my plants going indoors though...that's why I usually do them early.
But...as I promised to take part of the biggest tomato comp again...one must do everything to get the plants big and strong early on...

Last year started to early given the cold march etc.  just had to heat greenhouse more

In the storms this year lost the roof of this massive home made greenhouse that was made from metal windows ,had taken an allotment on from a chap who has now died simply because of this huge structure, much better then growing in a polytunnel as i found out last year, no comparison as the temps dont fluctuate much

Never mind!

We are going to plant some tomato seeds this weekend, they will be kept indoors before eventually being kept outside.

Yep did mine this weekend. Not too many as I am downscaling. They are for outdoors.
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com

8 varieties so far, still 4 to go. 4 of each in case and they've all come up, typical. Still, any extras will go into the plant sale in may .Ours will be in the cold tunnel eventually :happy7:

Has it been really wet in your part of France this winter?

Sowed some cherry toms in a pot on the windowsill last .week, planted a few onion sets into a belfast sink just to see but the rest are in the shed in modules, going really well but will resist the temptation for another 3 weeks, March can be a funny month

strawberry1

yes, ferline and strillo as they can live out and did very well in gropots on buckets. Sown 22 feb and started coming up yesterday. All up today so from now on I will be turning them each day. I just put strillo toms into ziplock bags in the freezer and they are brilliant in all ways, so several more strillo sown this year. Will wait 3 weeks before pricking out as nutrients will last that long, then v small pots, going up the sizes every 3 weeks or so

Yep mine are in. 23 varieties and about 6-10 of each sowed 3 days ago... first few showing through today. I'll end up planting about 60 odd plants at the plot and at home on the patio.. I'm still trying to find just a few varieties that I like for my future must grow list. Also have about 5 for types to try for a mammoth one!!

I tend to leave them in the modules as sown for quite a while and dont prick out too quickly. I may even give them some extra light this year.. but have to build another grow box to do this as the first one is full of onions, peppers and chillies.

I always plant least 2/3 of the plant under the soil so they produce a good strong set of roots on the plant that is covered so i dont care too much if they go leggy.

Sowed my first 2014 seeds yesterday - tomatoes & peppers for greenhouse along with cabbage and calabrese.  OH is not amused the living room windowsill is being taken over but she loves the harvests all the same.  3 weeks or so and they will be in the greenhouse.

Oh Lord yes, and it still is. We have had about a total of 5 dry days since... November? The garden is very boggy but it has been so mild that my sprouts have only just finished and we are getting beet leaf and swiss chard quite regularly.
