Birds eye fish fingers  :dontknow:

I don't much like fish but I can usually handle fish fingers once in a while, as long as I've tomato sauce with them. I had some a little while back and OMG disgusting or what!!!! They tasted like hot cod liver oil  :icon_puke_l:

HP beans are not too bad, but when I have time I prefer my own.
Taste buds do alter as we get older and I suspect that sometimes we remember purchased foods from the 70's which had even more additives than now!
I used to love Angel delight (not as keen on Instant whip though!- that was cheap rubbish LOL!!)
Now I could never even think about buying products like that.

Second that.  Sometimes they are on offer, but watch the size on the tin it lowers now and again. Too many in a tin anyway, they did put them in a big fridge pack but that was a waste of money. a couple of spoonfuls per person and the remainder have to be used in a certain time after opening. Who wants baked beans every meal?

One taste that has seemed to have kept is barlett pears in syrup. I look forward to chrissymas every year for my annual can of pears. They have a smell and taste that reminds me of years ago when these things were rationed and my father sent some home from where he was stationed abroad. If only I could still get a tin of cream to really bring back the memory.

One I think hasn't changed much is that good old standby - Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney pie.  Loved them as a kid and still do.  On the other hand, the Princes ones are not very nice.

I buy a jar of Marmite about every three years, today I opened a new one and you are right, it is far less dense. I wonder what the keeping qualities will be...

My daughter bought some Floral Gems from the British shop a few days ago and even those have changed

.I am beginning to think very seriously that in another decade or two people will have stopped cooking unless it is prepackaged muck, they will be eating out or using take away and no one will know what  a tomato ever tasted like.

I spent sometime thinking about tastes with my eyes closed, things from the past and we do remember if we try,but most things are not the same.

Years ago, foods were made to suit the customer or they did not sell and the competition from the baker further up the road was fierce, customer service was great, now things are made to benefit the manufacturer and gradually and insidiously the public have slowly gone the way they want us to and the customer service has gone too.

Restaurants are no better, things come frozen and are reheated, it is only in the VERY expensive places that a meal is cooked from scratch. I think the average chef here is about 15, well maybe a bit of an stretch but usually it is someone who didn't finish school and they took a low paying cooks job, yet years ago a chef took years to get to where he was actually cooking.

I guess each generation moans about how things used to be, but this is different, the industrial chefs in factories just were not there years ago so things had to be made without all the additives .

Very sad..

^^ but why did this happen?  It is all about price.  There was a time when you went shopping in the High Street and bought what they were selling that you could afford.  Simples.  Now you can put your shopping list onto an internet site and buy from the cheapest supermarket.  And when they have to cut costs to compete, so what can they do?  They find savings in the product as other costs have been already trimmed to the bone.  And selling is a complex business these days, so many people in the chain and they all want a cut of the price.

I'm a sole trader and all people want to know about is price.  And then buy from a competitor who is 1% cheaper and then moan about the quality.  And don't get me started about TV shows like Cowboy Builders.  It could just as easily be called Greedy Stupid Home Owners.
