If I plant beetroots in March or April they usually do very well and are ready in late June or through the whole of July. When I have planted in June they do not do as well so make sure that March and April are your months for planting beetroots. Don't let your beetroots get too big as they can go woody.

Welcome to A4A brownhare70 :happy7:

June sown beetroots never seem to grow as large as spring sown ones but can still produce a worthwhile crop if pulled late sept/october. Also as a way to use up vacant ground atfer the first crops are harvested.

I agree with you that march and april does seen to be the "natural" beetroot sowing months. At least that's when they give the most predictable
results.

What variety of beetroot would you two recommend for small round ones please?  Some I grew this year were too big and tasted earthy.

Pick them earlier and succession sow so that you don't get too many getting big all at once.

Hi, brownhare, welcome to a4all  :toothy10:
We use the later ones for baby beetroot, yum. We plant cylindra and boltardy and use them as and when we need them, pulling all the later ones for storage  :happy7:

I grow Alto - it seems to preform well throughout the year but loves water and a fertile soil.  This year was great for beets and I still have some in the ground...
Moved to Portugal - ain't going back!

Welcome to A4A Brownhare70.

I also use boltardy. It seems to be good both as a young beetroot and as a more mature one.

Sorry I forgot to say hello. We have not done badly with beetroots this year though the earlier planted ones did better and my wife has pickled a few jars ready for Christmas.

Ibought some of those yellow beetroot off the market already grown a little and planted them but in the end most went to seed. Those that did'nt were not very nice.

I got quite good beetroot this year owing to the rainy weather. I have gotten better results since I started sowing in a seed bed and transplanting. I used to think that beetroot didn't like that but actually it seems to be the best way to do it.
I tried a variety called Bikores but didn't germinate. Boltardy and Cheltenham Greentop worked well, but next year I am trying the trusty old Detroit Globe as they are cheap and as it's a bit hit and miss.. I am erring on the side of caution (and lots of resowing)!!!
2012 - Snow in February, non-stop rain till July. Blight and rot are rife. Thieving voles cause strife. But first runner beans and lots of greens. Follow an English allotment in urban France: http://roos-and-camembert.blogspot.com
