Allotments 4 All

Over half of my overwintered onions have been got at by slugs,at first glance they look fine(the tops are still growing away) but on closer inspection they'v been eaten from the bottom up and some hollowed out.This is the first time I've had this problem on my plot,is it just me ..or as anybody else got the same?

Same here.   Could not believe it.   Ashes round the edge of the bed and a few slug pellets around the onions.  This was 3 weeks ago and some of the eaten ones have started growing again.  Most have died.

Went to the allotment this morning and the birds had pulled out a number of mine.

This could explain what has been happening to mine. I've never had this problem with the autumn planting onions, but this year I have had a number eaten, but on the side, but I haven't checked whether those that don't appear to have been touched have rooted. A job for tomorrow - fingers crossed that the will be alright.

Me too - and mine had been rooted in compost and were growing nicely.

Little ****ers. 

I put the sets in then mulch over the top, which stops the birds getting near them.

Why this year 

Our chickens ravaged ours when they escaped during our holiday in September - feel like putting up Paxo signs in case it happens again...

It's not birds - it's slugs. And mine were under enviromesh.

Something has been digging mine up.   Caught the pheasant at it.    It seems to know how to get rid of net curtains which minimises the slugs and voles, and just sits on the normal garden netting and pecks through.  And it is not afraid of me in the slightest.

I lost a lot to the slugs last year too... started off well in compost, but then eaten away from underneath...

They must have teeth, i have never come across this, slugs eating onion sets, but never the less i had to check when i went to the plot,......... nothing nibled

Thankyou for the warning. We went on a slug safari this morning starting with the seed sown winter onions...well.....we had quite a haul and have to admit I wouldn't of first thought of onions as slug bait. it looked like caterpillar damage except the culprits were tiny slugs hidden inside the leaves and all over the bed. Likewise I might add in the cauliflowers, lettuces etc etc... never felt so good about murder..

Right, off there today with my beer traps. I was told it was too cold for the little beggars
