Dateline: 20th april 2005.

First aquilegia spotted in flower in my garden.

Just thought you'd like to know (especialy their A4ALL member namesake!)

If any one can beat this i'd be very interested to hear.

Mine are only1"/2" high, Richard! Still I'm a lot further north and it is their very first year so I guess it's fingers crossed time again for me.....

The first one flowered about two weeks ago, there's another one just opening now. and more in bud.

What type/colour is yours Richard? My first one was pale pink the second darker pink/red.

And I have a periennial geraniums in flower (can't remember the name - deep red, almost black flowers. lovely!)

Thought you might do Aqui being in London. My first aquilegia is a purple 'vulgaris' underneath my (still flowering) forsythia. Rather an unusual flower combination I think you'll agree!

Geraniums too eh?. No no sign of mine flowering yet though I have a few flowers on an Oxalis out already

I love purple and yellow together. I think they look great! My forsythia finished a few weeks back. But it's only tiny, so not many flowers anyway.

I hope I have some of the purple ones this year. I had some seed from some, so finger's crossed.

I saw an Oxalis for sale a few weeks back. It was beautiful - almost black leaves, really lovely shape. Insignicant flowers. Why didn't I buy it? Must go back and see if they still have some.

Well gawwwwwd know why .... I have an array of leaves !!!! But no buds !  Why?? ???  I would love to know.  My aquilegias are planted with my olive tree, have always produced flowers but this year !  :o ::) :P

Marianne - no need to panic. It's still early. As Richard said, I'm in London and he's in Devon (right?) so we're both in warm areas. Only a few of mine are flowering. still plenty of time.

I have all sorts of self produced aquilegias, in a variety of colours, including a couple of white ones  ;D.  Purple ones though are quite common in the garden.

My Oxalis (I hope we are taling the same plant here ???)has lime green foliage (clover/shamrock shaped leaves)with pink flowers. Keeps flowering for ages in early summer. Does VERY well in the garden if you know what i mean!

Richard - I'm sure it's the same plant (Oxalis) just a different variety. Sounds like the same shape of leave. Maybe I'm glad now I didn't get any!

Oh I didnt mean that bad aqui! it just seems to like my garden. From one original plant i now have about half a dozen around the place and it doesnt seem to mind sun or light shade either.


Dont let me put you off growing it for goodness sakes.

Aquilegia - I live in Herts, only 25 miles from London - so not far from you - but still nothing todate....
Lots and lots of lovely green leaves  ;D  Will have to learn to be patient.

Richard - I had lots of oxalis in my garden and in fact someone said it was a weed .... ???

A nice weed though marianne! :). Its easy to dig up bits you dont want and if youcut it back after flowering it wont self seed that much.

I suppose it depends on the variety you have.

I had the very pink one.  Beautiful little flowers with large dark green leaves and I never considered them to be a nuisance in my garden.  As you say, they are very very pretty !  :D
