Allotments 4 All

I bought 24 raspberry canes this year, planted and they came on well. However I have had fruit off them which is very odd to me as they are not Autumn fruiting ones and should only produce canes this year for tying in thereby geting  fruit on the tied in canes the  second season.  The bushes are about 30 inches tall  right now. I have never seen this before can anyone explain it to me. I don't know wether to prune the fruited canes off as I woiuld have done if it was the second year or tie them in.

They came from a very repuatble soft fruit grower.

There are some spring varieties which fruit on new canes.  I have one call Glen Lyon which does it so it fruits twice per year.   Not sure why.

This often happens when planting new canes. I bought and planted 18 canes this year as I was starting a new plot. Several of them fruited a bit on the old wood although I had cut them down to about 12 inches. They are now forming new canes ready to fruit properly next year. A feed of general fertilizer could help them on their way.

I wouldn't dwell on it too much.

Just cut down each cane as it finishes fruiting. Then it really doesn't matter whether it is summer or autumn.

The cows in the adjacent field have sorted out my deliberations concerning raspberries - they've eaten an entire row. Hope they enjoyed them...

Thank you all. They are definately a summer fruiting one but I will cut the fruited canes out and tie in the others of they didn't have fruit on them. We got about 4 pounds of fruit which really surprised me.

Cutting the canes which have fruit would certainly not suit my Glen Lyon it would remove the spring flush of fruit.  The bit that fruits in the autumn dies back but there is still 2/3 of nice green left.
