Always argued for charcoal but I use my gas one everyday now and would never go back.  :D

I don't know about gas, but when you run out of gas you run out of gas.  When you run out of charcoal don't you have quite a bit of residual heat remaining?

I  would go for gas every time it is just so controlable and your ready to cook so quickly. We've had ours for about 7 years and use it all year round ( inc Christmas day ) as it has a roll top lid you can cook joints of meat on it.Difference in the taste of the food between gas and charcoal in my opinion next to none. If you get a chance try a full English breakfast on a BBQ it,s out of this world. :P

When working in Gibraltar we used to land beside the dry dock as the baulks of hardwood timber were burnt there if there was any sign of cracking - elf & saftee you know.

These baulks used to stop burning after a while and the resultant charcoal was quite good and cheeeep.

I'd always had a charcoal bbq which I loved but since I've had a gas one about 6-7 years, I'd not go back.  Gas is just great, easy and quick to get going, flame control is good and a bottle of gas last for ages plus it's got a gauge on the bottle, so easy to keep an eye on if it starts to run low. I've got a roll top lid one too, which as already said is really handy for a joint should you want or need to. Roasted chicken and roast potatoes are so scrummy!

Taste - food is superb, and I find it is more evenly cooked  :) Must admit I use the barbie much more since I changed to gas.

Can you tell me if there is the barbecue taste with gas barbie, and what is the difference between that and the grill?

Hi pumpkinlover you definitely get the taste with a gas BBQ, there are different types but the way they work is the same principal the fat drips from the food and hits the lava rock briquettes, vaporising plates or what ever system it has burns and flavours the food. obviously this is only my opinion on a subject that has been debated many times before.

Yes, big time  :) I think food cooked on a gas bbq has as good a bbq taste as food done on a charcoal barbie.
I've used both a lava rock type and vaporising plates and they both seem to give as good a bbq flavour to food  :)

A few years ago I won a gas BBQ in a raffle. Used it about half a dozen times, but got so many comments on lack of flavour, that I gave it away and have been back on charcoal ever since.

Gas is:-

Easy to light                             Yes
Quickly ready to use                 Yes
My choice for flavour                 No

Having used gas, we would never revert to charcoal now.  Gas is instantaneous and there there are no fumes and nasty taste of parafin from the firelighters which I associate with charcoal cooking.  Maybe we didn't leave the charcoal long enough to get going!  Gas is instantaneous whereas charcoal can take a good hour to get to up to temperature.

Got to be charcoal, I don't think a gas bbq is a bbq !

Had my big annual one Saturday, about 40 people on a traditional charcoal bbq, can't beat it:-)

Cheers

Proper wood burning barbecue anytime!
No charcoal of starter fluids just wood and some paper to start with and once the flames die down it is time for cooking. After cooking we chuck little bit more wood on and enjoy the light from the flames.. ;D

Hmm...I've got some Scottish trout in freezer...and lemons to use up...I can see me lighting the fire soon... ;)
