Who has some experience with Agapanthus? How long does it take to grow from seed to flower? Now I have 'my babies'  in a greenhouse but do I take them in wintertime inside?

We grew some whites from seed. They flowered in the third year.  :)

Thank you. What do you do with the youngsters the first year? Do you take them inside?
My favorite is the purple one :-)

I would protect them from the frost first few years..particularly when you can't plant them that deep yet being so small so if you should get really cold weather, you run a risk of loosing them.
You are located quite north and Agapanthus is one of those 'border line' with hardiness plants so if it would be me, I would play safe.
I've lost mature agapanthus many times..they are ok in mild winters but eventually comes the really cold one and every time I've lot the lot if they've been in ground. Even with free draining sandy soil and shelted spot..they've failed to survive many winters. Lifted in cold GH they've been fine.

Hello Han and welcome to A4A.

Mine was given to me as a small seedling about five years ago.  I planted it outside at the allotment and  put straw on top of it every winter to protect it.

It flowered for the first time two years ago.

I took these photos  a few days ago

We have ours in a big pot and put it in the greenhouse over winter. It's standing guard in full flower by the back door now. It seems to thrive being cramped.

Brother in law puts his next to the wall of the house but he is much further south than you.  Visited Squash64 a few years ago and they are well protected by sheds, fences and buildings etc.

Love them fell in love with them on visit to California where they are everywhere.  Tried several times but always manage to kill them.

Thanks all for your replys! Very helpfull! Agapanthus is my favorite!

Bought once a pot with mature Agapanthus in it. After a couple of years there were almost each year 15-17 flowering stems! In wintertime I did put some bubble plastic (how do you call it?) around it.
Had to leave those in Holland. Now trying to raise a few again by my one. Bought 3 roots at Lidl this spring and bought some seed elsewhere.  From you all I learn that I have to be patient with Agapanthus for at least a year or two.
In winter I will keep them in the greenhouse. When frost arrives I can put a heating on in that greenhouse.
I have still left a package of seed. Does it matter when I start growing seeds with Agapanthus? Is it alright if I start now with my last package of seed?

Thank you for the pictures! Lovely ones!

I lost all mine in those arctic spells we had a couple of years ago. I'm not trying again until I've got a greenhouse up.

Snap - that's what I do. Take the pot in in the Autumn and let everything die down. Wait for the new shoots before watering and then back outside end of May beginning of June. A bit of tomato food every now and again seems to help. I shall need to split and repot them soon though.
